New leaderboard for tetrisconcept players on Tetrisfriend..I wonder why except for the solo 2min where matt is well ranked around 15th, in the other modes, few hundreds of player destroy us..Are they all japanese ?? Or is it simply because we are not focused on this game ?

Speed + Unbreaking back to back bonus + Many T-Spins = Massive score.

Don't feel bad...you can't just jump into this and expect a high score immediately. SRS finesse, slow DAS finesse?, hard drop, T-Spins, etc. take a lot of effort to learn. I'd be shocked if you mastered this on your first few tries. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Bah. tis a stupid game.

We all know just how broken Marathon is, and Solo is an exersise in rapid ST stacking. If that isn't your strong point, don't even bother trying.

I could easily see an AI trumping all humans at solo.

Great advice. "Is money not your strong point? Bah, don't even try working hard to secure your future."

If you're not willing to dedicate a lot of time and effort to learn to ST, don't even bother trying.

You might be trying too hard in Marathon. Apparently, that's a bad thing.

Check this topic out.

My point is unless you can ST stack FAST you arent' gonna get ANYWHERE on the leaderboard.

I feel it's a gimmicky way of playing, and refuse to learn it. So I don't try. it's a waste for me to even try Solo.

Perhaps i put it wrong. But if ST stacking is not your cup of tea, the Guideline's score attacks are not for you.

you can still get pretty high up without ST stacking, i don't ST stack and i'm currently top rank. About 1/3rd of the top 20 don't ST stack, so it's not the only way to get anywhere on the leaderboard. don't let the lack of knowing how to ST stack discourage you from playing.

Tetris Marathon : Does the speed count for the points ??
Because I did my best game, I mean, the most possible Tetris b2b that I can, until the last line, and struggled at 699k, I played very slowly..

It's not the speed, but the strategy. Tetris Friends uses the scheme where certain actions(b2b tetris, most t-spins) can actually take away more lines from the Goal than are cleared on the screen. I'm pretty sure your first tetris took away 4 lines(of course), but successive tetrises took 5 each.

It's great how they never released a detailed page on how score is calculated. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

That isn't quite the case. In order to score that high, you need to get pretty creative. There are two main things that you have to abuse heavily in order to get that kind of score. I'll summarize what they are and then outline the optimal Marathon strategy. The description of how to abuse the systems may be a bit wordy; feel free to skip down to the outline if you're more interested in the results than the theory.

Thing #1 is the Goal system. Goal is designed in a rather awkward manner: 1 Goal point is deducted for every (100 * Level) points earned. (A Single will deduct 1 Goal, a standard Tetris will deduct 8 Goal, a T-spin Double with the back-to-back bonus will deduct a whopping 18 Goal, etc.) However, it won't always round up points in subdivisions of 100.

Trick #1 is to use Single->Single combos for most of each level. The first Single is worth 100 pt, the second is worth 150, but both deduct 1 Goal. You're getting more points than you're "supposed" to be able to get with this method.

Thing #2 is how Goal behaves when you finish a level. If you deduct more Goal than you need in order to finish a level, it won't count against the Goal of the next one.

Trick #2 is to make a high-scoring clear on the very last Goal point of the level. The best way to do this is to get a back-to-back T-spin Double. The back-to-back bonus has to come from somewhere, so you'll have to do a Tetris before that. So, you'll want to do a Tetris when Goal = 9 to deduct 8, and then a T-spin Double at Goal 1. You score (2400 * Level) points in the space that would normally only allow (900 * Level) points.

***Outline of optimal Marathon game***
On Level 1: 2 Single->Single combos (Goal 5 - 2 - 2 = 1). One T-spin Double. (Goal 1 - 12 = 0)
On Level 2: Tetris->T-spin Double (Goal 9 - 8 = 1. Goal 1 - 18 = 0.)
On Levels 2+: Single->Single combo until Goal = 9. Tetris->T-spin Double.

EDIT: Looking at the stats you pasted again, I'm not sure about the Level 2 strategy anymore. (It has 13 Tetrises, whereas my outline calls for 14.) Either way, the outline here will net you a very high score.

... And that's why you should forget Marathon and go to the timed solos.

DIGITAL
07-18-2008, 10:26 PM
Not to mention that Marathon is more gimmicky than skillful. At least with STing, you're required to have a strong sense of T-Spins to pull it off quickly, efficiently, and consistently.

3 things matter in marathon

1) hard drop as muchas possible
2) get partial goal line s(only really possible with single single combo)
3) make huge scoring clears when you have 1 goal left. (b2btsd)

Here's a video I made for higher scores in Tetris Splash. This will also apply to tetrisfriends... and any other guideline tetris game. I got tired of trying to explain it to people who message me over XBL. Now I just point them to the vid.
