Did anyone get into this game? I just got a copy and I'm pretty intrigued by the gold/silver 4x4 block stuff. I'll have to play around with it a bit to see if I can get itno it.

It's tough for me to put down Tetris DS, though. I'm to the point that I'm sacrificing sleep to play. I just passed 5k WiFi matches http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Yeah, by the sounds of it you mean The New Tetris, I play it a little but not that often. The game itself does run quite smothly but I hate the fact that there is no points, I mean I dont really see the purpose in having Ultra Mode with only lines.

Tell me if you have any luck with it, I am intrested to hear what kind of 'goals' other people can achieve.

I wouldn't call it smooth... This is the only commercial Tetris game I know of that can't maintain 60 fps.

I found this site (http://gilly.homeip.net/tetris) with a bunch of strategy/info/videos. Clearly, the most important thing is to abuse the gold/silver 4x4 blocks.

Feel free to copy this info into the wiki:

The New Tetris for N64 had lock delay, soft and firm drop, 4x4 squares, hold piece (IHS), three next pieces, ghost piece (TLS), and milder wall kick than SRS (notably, T-spin triples don't work but lock delay is still abusable on no-garbage play). Its speed never got anywhere near 20G.

single: +1 point

double: +2 points

triple: +3 points

tetris: +5 points

make 4x4 square of one type of tetromino: +0 points, form gold square

make other 4x4 square: +0 points, form silver square

clear each line of silver square: +5 points

clear each line of gold square: +10 points

t-spin: +0 points, causes earthquake that breaks blocks into individual pieces that cascade to form lines, may break up silver and gold squares

The "square" mode of Tetris Worlds for multiplatform was much the same except it had a longer lock delay, a hard drop (no lock delay) instead of firm drop, full SRS, and (on platforms other than GBA) five next pieces.

double: +3 points (2 for lines, 1 for bonus)

triple: +5 points (3 for lines, 2 for bonus)

tetris: +8 points (4 for lines, 3 for bonus)

t-spin 0 lines: +1 point

t-spin single: +4 points (1 for line, 3 for bonus)

t-spin double: +9 points (2 for lines, 7 for bonus)

Does it have true IHS though?

(Initial Hold System)

As in, there is an ARE time during which you can keep the Hold button depressed... and then as a piece spawns the held piece enters while the random piece is placed in the hold slot.

As opposed to the regular Hold feature, which must be used after a piece has spawned.

I may have misunderstood what IHS meant, as all this Arika terminology is new to me. Let me try holding L during ARE in a few implementations of Square Tetris. If IHS means that hold-swap occurs if the hold-swap key (L button on N64, GBA, and DS) is held while a tetromino spawns: The New Tetris (official game for N64) does not have IHS. Tetris Worlds (official game for GBA) does not have IHS. Tetris DS (official game for Nintendo DS) does not have IHS. (It also does not have ARE except the pause while clearing a line.) TOD (fangame for GBA) has IHS during what the engine calls "state time pauses" (that is, after clearing a line or after forming a square), but not otherwise.

Yeah the jargon is... well jargon. I didn't make the rules I just follow them! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyhow, thanks for clearing that up. The breakdown by game was also interesting. Makes me want to make a family tree of Tetris game features.

IRS is patent system.

yeah, that's so weird. it definitely existed in earlier games than tgm, though (and not just ttc licensed).

Truthfully, before TDS came out, this was my favorite game. Got all the wonders, master'd the art of making blocks. Playing games that went 3 to 4 hours long, for over 10,000 lines.

But that wasn't why I loved it. I loved the game because of the 4 player madness that would come about whenever we played around here. At one point, it was comparable to the madness of playing mario kart's block fort, or Goldeneye... Of course there have been games with 4 player since then, but still, it was the first one I played with it, and offered sprint mode which allowed even the best players to lose if they got off to a rough start. (1 silver block instead of a gold)

I haven't played TNT much (as I said, i recently picked up a copy and just I can't put down TDS), but I really like the gold/silver 4x4 block mechanic. I hope that this game is available on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console for WiFI play because I really don't have any friends that are into Tetris.

I like the square too, and that's why I put it in TOD.

Hours have probably become years that I have invested into this game. Now my girlfriend is addicted so whenever i play wifi I rock out to the amazing music of N64 tetris. Yeah those gilly videos are amazing. The best advice is build platforms that are 4 high on each wall. incomplete squares on top of incomplete squares. cofigure it so that you can wait out pieces. My high score on sprint (3 minutes) is 804. The highest ive seen is gilly, 868. Curious, what are your high scores?

Having gotten it AFTER Tetris DS, I just cant get into it. Every time I went to hook up the N64, I decided to play TDS instead.

I've got a bunch of stuff on ebay ending today. My copy of TNT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8291140258&rd=1&sspagename=STRK_253AMESE_253AIT&rd=1) is complete (the box is slightly damaged) and at a paltry $11.50. If anyone wants a copy, here's your golden opportunity.

No N64? No problem! I've also got my N64 on there, so poke around and you'll find all sorts of good stuff (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZcsullivanQQhtZ-1).
