English version of Blokkendoos/Blockbox can be found at http://www.blockboxgame.com (http://www.blockboxgame.com/default.htm)

SEASON THREE HAS NOW FINISHED
FINAL POSITIONS HAVE YET TO BE PROCESSED
SEASON FOUR DUE IN DECEMBER, DATE TBD, REGISTRATION OPEN

So, a few ground rules:

1) The IRC is by far the easiest way to arrange matches (#tetrisconcept on quakenet.org, or click the "Join Live Chat" link on the main page), and this method should make it easier for everyone. Obviously there's some personal discretion involved in this rule, but it's primarily to just remove the people at the first step who aren't going to actually make an effort to play their matches. I'm not saying that to take part you need either 1000+ posts here or to be on IRC every day without fail.
2) Matches will be first to 15 wins.
3) Each player plays every other player in their division once.
4) Matches shall be played on Blokkendoos, and with the standard rated game settings. Obviously DAS and rotation system are at the individual players' discretion.
5) The points awarded to each player after the match shall be equal to 15 plus the difference in score (including negative difference, so a 15-6 result would give 24 points to the winner and 6 points to the loser)

FOR REGISTERING:
- New players will automatically be placed into the lowest division initially
- If they wish, they can play a play-off match between the top player in their division, or the bottom in the division above (decided at random). If they win this game they will move up a division and be allowed to take a similar play-off for the division above if they so wish. If they lose, they remain where they are.
- The number of relegation and promotion places available for each division will reflect any imbalance in the number of people in each division.

Players that enter later on won't be at a disadvantage. That's an advantage of having a league. With a tournament tree you can't really add people in during the latter stages, while with a league adding people in is easy, they'll just be on zero points with zero games played and as they play games they can pick up points the same way everyone else did.

By points difference I meant difference in games won during the individual match. So if a player won 15-9, they'd get 2 + 6 + 3 = 11 points, and their opponent would just get the 2 for having played a game. Winning 15-3 would give 17 points.
What I meant was that with the first suggested points total, whichever player won would always get 15 + 5 = 20 points. It would matter to the player who lost what the score was, but not the player who won. The difference between 15-0 and 15-14 would be zero points for the victor and 14 points for the loser.

I've not figured out the points system because ideally I'd like one which causes both players to care at least slightly about score, but means that each game played should result in at least a small points gain, which is quite hard to do.

milkolate, I'll PM you later.

What about some kind of an ongoing ladder system? I know a lot of games do this. Players would get points for beating people higher then them on the ladder. Anyway, I'm in, although I also plan on losing a lot.

A ladder system could work, and I might implement it. I think for at least a first run through though a league system will probably work better.

I think I might just implement a score system of 2 points per game played and (difference in score + 3) for the winner.

Whoa...this might be one of the best ideas, since many tourneys at TC haven't really finished...
Really: it solves the problem that people might cancel; it's a very good system for people who want to join later; players can arrange their matches without time pressure; you don't have to play many matches if you don't want to; on the other hand, you can play more matches when you have the time...
And theoretically, you could keep this league alive for infinite years.
So as you've noticed: I think this concept will work fine.

You only have to fine-tune the scoring system: I think it's good to implement a system where a high rated player earns less point when winning against a low rated player. Your first suggestion about earning points by the difference of wins must be changed a bit: example:
High rated wins against low rated with 15-0, then he would get +15, only for the difference of wins. If he does this against more low rated players, he would be able to gain a infinite amount of points http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I would like to join this league, even though I don't have time this month...but that's no problem with your concept http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

ps: The only disadvantage will be for the host: many players http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_arrow.gif many matches http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_arrow.gif leaderboard must be edited frequently http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_arrow.gif good luck with that, Rosti http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

I have a question.

This looks similar to the standings you see in most sports such as hockey before playoffs starts if I have understood this correctly.
So, will there be a set number of rounds to play? Or else it would never end ever, or is that what you want?

Will there be a limit in the number of times you can play against the same opponent?
An example: Rosti is better than me so he could just play me over and over again winning 15-0 every time and gain many points.
At the same time I am better than somebody else, and could just as easily play that opponent over and over to gain points.
This could place me as high in the standings as Rosti although I'm nowhere near his skill level.
So there needs to be a restiction.

Guys, look at rule #5, which has been there since the start.
To clarify anyway for those who can't be bothered reading the original post, it states that each player shall play each other player ONCE. It'd always be possible to change this to twice or start the league afresh when it's pretty much concluded (or use a ladder system).

I want to try and encourage people to play matches, which means every player should finish the match and come away with at least 0 points. If I just made it a pure goal-difference sort of thing, then some players would be getting negative scores, and it'd be a massive put-off towards playing people you knew you were going to lose against. Yet there's no way to have a league system where there are no negative points and to have it run indefinitely without people simply accumulating more points by playing more games rather than being good, hence the restriction on the number of times you can play each player.

To revise the scoring system, I'm now looking towards the points awarded after the match being (15 ± difference in score). This will mean the losing player will receive one point for each game they win, and the winning player will get 30 points minus the number of games they conceded to their opponent. I think this works better because it means that players should pick up at least a few points from each match (providing incentive) and also means that the score of the match will matter to both players. I think this should add a little more to the league, because in previous tournaments it's just been that better players have beaten weaker players. Now the better players have to beat the weaker players, and also by as large a margin as possible, while the incentive is there for the weaker players to try and pick up a few points off the stronger ones even if they ultimately concede the match.

The only time I played DIGITAL alone on Blockbox I won the first game and then was crushed the next 25 games or so. So I never had the time to take in the victory. I'm still not sure if it ever really happened... Also won once against colour_thief, but that was due to lag so there was nothing to be happy about. In games with multiple players I won against some elite players on a few rare occasions, but that had more to do with luck with garbage or not being targeted by garbage as the big boys didn't really care what I was doing. ^^

OK, tables are up and running. Feel free to make a start on your matches if you wish.
As was pointed out, there's a fair bit of updating to be done. I'll try and update the tables at least every 24 hours, but it's unlikely I'll do so after every single match.

Also feel free to post any queries in this thread and people are still welcome to join.

I was looking around, and there are a lot of places that host game leagues, such as http://www.casesladder.com/ (http://www.casesladder.com/default.htm) (which has a user created league page at http://www.myleague.com (http://www.myleague.com/default.htm)) and others. This might make it easier on Rosti, since I bet he might get tired of manually updating things all the time. Or, there are probably ways of installing a league system locally, on tetrisconcept.com. I googled for "ladder league" and found a bunch of stuff. Also, I'm not sure how practical how it will be to have everyone play everyone else, considering time zones and such. That's kind of the nice thing about leagues compared to tournaments, is that there is less scheduling involved.

Edit: Here's another interesting one (http://games-ladder.net/home.php) that has both free hosting and source availability. It is applicable to any game.

Rosti bt Zircean 15 - 0

Ezzelin, for the number of players we actually have I'm fine to be updating the league. It's really not much effort aside from screencapping the images and uploading them. I'm quite happy to do it once or twice a day because I'm not that busy.

If the number of players starts getting pretty high, then I'd consider a ladder system, but currently I think a league works perfectly fine.

I'm actually looking at a workaround anyway to a different IRC channel. I dislike bringing so many people to the current one when they aren't yet really fully integrated into the community, and their reason for being in the channel has nothing really to do with the main topic behind the channel.

The current one should be a little more private, and I'll use a different one for this. It shouldn't be any extra hassle for people aside from adding a new autojoin channel. If that.

Hmm good question. I guess I could do some mathsy stuff and distribute points out on the basis of the opponents they've already played and the results from the games, but I think the easier option would probably be to wipe the player from the league and remove all points received from them.

if there are 50 people playing I cant get in the room. the lag seems to vary depending on the game I play 40 lines is worse then classic. DAS is out of control, and the thing making the game unplayable atm. It might be that the lag is making me trigger DAS when i don't want it.

seems like the issue is running java, tetrisfriends doesn't lag on me. block blox is unplayable for now, it lags, key presses get lost and DAS appears seemingly out of nowhere.

GFish, you can join, though I think I might make you the last person, unless someone drops out.

Could be that for the second run through (assuming this one does get finished, but it looks like it at least mostly will) then I'll split the league up into two separate divisions, and have fewer players and matches in each division, but with players being promoted/demoted at the end of each "season".

Sadly I'm going to have to take a break from any online Tetris for a while...the other day playing Blokkendoos for a few hours really made me realize how messed up my wrist was. I'm fairly sure I must have carpel tunnel or something down those lines because it's been sore for 3-4 days now and I'm talking like even picking up a small glass of water. It blows, but I will hopefully try and get a wrist brace here soon and see how my mobility is with it. Anyway, good luck for now and I'll check back to see how everyone is doing as often as I can.

Tables have been updated. SiRTeTRiS has been removed as requested (as well as any matches played against him) and goofer has been added.

All players who do not currently have any matches played have two weeks as of this post to get matches played. Any players wishing to sign up will also have two weeks to do so. After that people will have to wait until the second league starts to join, because this thing won't ever finish if people keep joining.

If it is possible Rosti LFC I would like to join the league. I am not that great of a player, but I think I can at least give some of the lower players some competition and hopefully get player. Just wanted to ask seeing as you have changed the deadline to April 5th. If it is an issue or anything feel free to decline my request. I look forward to taking on some really great Tetris players.

Rosti LFC
03-25-2009, 02:32 AM
Red Star, anyone can join as long as they play their matches (and it's before April 5th obviously) http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Something I'm considering, assuming this one gets finished, is that if I do a second league I'll actually split it up into to two divisions. I'm probably talking about this way too early given that this current one is only a quarter of the way through and has quite a way still to go, but I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

My plan so far would be that each division has half the players. The bottom three from the top division will get moved to the bottom one at the end of the 'season'. The top two from the bottom division automatically get moved to the top one, and 3rd-6th have a mini tournament to decide the last person to move up.
New players would automatically get added to the lower division.

An advantage of this system is that there are fewer matches to be played, meaning the seasons would be shorter, and maybe it introduces a little bit of real competition into the mid-range of players where people have little to fight for. A disadvantage would be that half the people competing don't get to play competitive matches against the top players, but I'm not sure how bothered people are by this.
It'd also be a little bit of extra work for me, but I'm not too fussed about that, and it'd be easier for someone to help me out independently if there's two divisions.

Calown
03-25-2009, 08:08 PM
I think this is a really good idea. It speeds up the competition a bit. Now noone of the lower players is waiting to get crushed by blink or Digital and vice-versa. In two competitions it would be more exciting to play someone.

Don't wait too long with starting new competitions, this one is dead. Change is needed.

jujube
03-25-2009, 09:55 PM
why not have a series of smaller tournaments with small windows for signing up and playing matches? say people have 24 hours to sign up and only 24 hours to play each match. if someone puts in the effort to play their match but can't find their competitor, they would win by default. if someone wants to sign up but doesn't do it in time then they can suck it http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif but they could always sign up for the next tourney just a few days later. it would keep the fields small, and the players involved would probably get their matches played because they wouldn't have time to lose interest.

maybe some tourneys would end up really small, with 4 players or whatever, but in this case it would be easy to complete the tourney, and maybe that would make it more fun for those involved.

m:)
03-25-2009, 11:25 PM
going along with jujube's idea, what about a 1 day tourney. with less matches per player, and rounds being played simultaneously.

i don't care if i get crushed, i just want to play good players, but two "classes" sounds good also.

BTW An update is needed http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

Rosti LFC

As said, league tables are updated with new players and results. Things seem to check out, but notify me if you see any mistakes I've made or results I've missed.

YOU GUYS HAVE UNTIL 6th MAY TO PLAY MATCHES

At 10pm BST on May 6th I shall close the league. No more results will be accepted after that point. I know I've not necessarily been rapid updating this thing (I will be from now on - I was waiting until I knew which players were being wiped to do so), but could we try not doing our homework the day before it's due to be handed in eh? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I'll probably run this again, but the second time there will be two divisions. Players who finish 1st-12th in this run shall be in Division 1, while those 13th-24th and any extra players who ask to join in the mean time shall be in Division 2. This split is noted by the blue dashed line on the league table. It's also a region where the competition is pretty close, so there should be an incentive to play games.

I'm not taking any sort of thing into account for points per game or anything. If they've got more points than you because they've played more matches, then tough shit, because you should have found your opponents. If anyone is really being awkward when you ask them to play matches, then PM me and I'll try and sort it out. If two players finish level on points, the higher place shall be given to the person who has played the larger number of matches.

Anyone interested in helping me by updating the tables for the 2nd Division should PM me and we can work something out. Excel 2007 or some other way to make the graphics is required (unless you can be bothered putting in the time to make it text-based)

Updated on the main page up to and including Red Star over Ai 15-9 (the scores and posts after that were edited in and posted after I'd uploaded stuff). I'll try and keep updating it daily from now on if matches get played.

And thanks kotetsu. At the very least it'll be good to double-check for errors.

Blink has taken 1st place, pretty much, but it's still very close around the mid-table cut-off mark.

Dang. Is it bad that I didn't question March 6th at all. I was seriously thinking it would take a year for some weird reason. Anyways, anyone part of the blockbox league can hit me up whenever I am on. Hopefully I will start improving my game.

You can join it for the next round, which I'll probably start in June.

Just a bump to remind people this thing will finish on Wednesday at 10pm BST.

I'll probably let this thing sit out for a month (mostly because I've got my end of year exams) and then restart this mid-June, with the two divisions.

League is now finished, congrats to Blink for absolutely raping everyone with a pretty damn impressive average of 29.75 points per game.

The next season should start around 20th June, with two divisions. Preliminary lists are up on the first post for the two divisions. Players who are in italics are doubtful.

If anyone wants to be added or removed from the league, please post in this thread. I shall adjust the two divisions so that the number of players is roughly equal in each. Joining players shall have to start from the lower division. If there are enough players for 30 in total, I shall split it into three divisions, and if there are 40 into four divisions, and so on.

Both of you are added to Division B, which moves Zircean up to A.

The current format I'm looking at for promotion/relegation is as follows:

Bottom two in Division A move down, top two in B move up
3rd and 4th last in Division A play a single play-off match with 3rd and 4th respectively in Division B. The winner of this game gets the place in Division A.

No problem.

Unless PikaTheXIII and/or Digital give some sort of reply to this soon, then I'll take them off the groupings.

If anyone else also no longer wants to participate, also please say. Once we get up to 30 players there'll be three divisions instead of two, and considering the count is currently 27/29 we're not that far away.

Yokay
