TAP Master mode rules :

1 : Reach lv. 999 under 8:45:00
2 : Reach lv. 999 with the S9 rank
3 : Do the first 5 sections (000-500) under 1:05:00 for each one
4 : Do at least 2 tetrises in the 5 first sections (000-500)
5 : Do at least 1 tetrises in the 4 following sections (500-900)
6 : Section 500-600 musn't be 2sec slower than the average of the 5 first one
7 : For the 4 sections (600-999), section x musn't be 2sec slower than section x-1
8 : Survive the invisible section at the staff roll during 1min

ADVICE :

A good target for level 500 is 4:55
Try to perform the 5 first sections in 59sec for each one.

This is the optimal and maximal time I recommend for the whole Master mode :

* 0 - 100 ---> 60 sec ---> 1:00
100 - 200 ---> 59 sec ---> 1:59
200 - 300 ---> 60 sec ---> 2:59
300 - 400 ---> 58 sec ---> 3:57
400 - 500 ---> 58 sec ---> 4:55
500 - 600 ---> 58 sec ---> 5:53
600 - 700 ---> 50 sec ---> 6:43
700 - 800 ---> 45 sec ---> 7:28
800 - 900 ---> 40 sec ---> 8:08
900 - 999 ---> 37 sec ---> 8:45

yeah !

why several thread ?

why not just create a specific thread for all ranking ?

it could motivate us to play on each mode then...

and why not going deeper on the concept :

why not creating a clean HTML page or something ? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Absolutely. A year ago I could name every (well, every one that cared to interact with other players) Gm outside Japan off the top of my head... Now I don't think I can. I'm curious to see how many of us there are.

And I've been thinking about leaderboards too since they seem popular. Maybe a wiki page? I'm not sure... It's good to keep leaderboards visible to motivate people.

I think the forum should be splitted in a couple of sub-forums (something like "tgm" "tds" "herboris" "other tetris games" "random shit") and put such topics as annoucements (topics that stay at the top of the first page)

Rosti LFC
03-29-2007, 09:46 PM
"Random Shit" might be a bit too offensive for a board title.

I'm all for having more than one board though. We've grown a fair bit since I joined.

If you need any encouragement Rosti, level 750+ is a sweet spot for increasing grade. Also, S4 is extremely close to S3. So if you survived just a little more, you'd be S4.

Is there anywhere I can find the grade points? They are not included in the Wiki.

Also, what do the little badge things to the right hand side of the playing field mean? They obviously have something to do with section times, as they appear when you cross a level boundary like 200 or something.

You should download the hack that lets you start at wanted level.

I did play a couple of days at 700~ last month and increased my skill pretty quick !

If you do a lot of tetris in this section, your grade will grow pretty fast

Surely I might as well just play Death?

Death mode and high speed normal mode are different as what I have felt (lock delay and that sort of stuff aren't the same)

colour_thief
03-30-2007, 04:40 AM
Actually, even though the timings are a little different that's a pretty minor detail that shouldn't impede progress at Rosti's current stage. And playing Death gives him the benefit of possibly setting a new record. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

And Rosti, the closest thing to an explanation on the grade points is this thread (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=361). I don't think about the technical details when I play. In the end you just have to play fast and get tetrises.

Here's my first real attempt to reach 999. Master isn't as hard as I thought it would be. The only thing that bothers me is the annoying up down motion of sub-20g. That caused me to lag behind in time until it finally reached 500. Other than that, Master felt a little easier compared to Death. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Yeah, Up Down is quite bad if you don't have a joystick. Stresses the thumb too much for my poor wrists. I usually switch to TGM1 mode by holding down all the way. (x360 gamepad player)

Question is(maybe stupid):

Holding down > Up Down ?

Holding down is much easier but it's also much slower. You waste many frames for each tetromino placement.

AC : all clear : all stack clear

RO : rotation : ??????? (please explain to me!!!!!!!)

CO : combo : minimum 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 or 4 - 3 - 3 - 2

RE : recover : destroy fastly the stack after having been in anguish..

SK : skill : depend of the number of tetris

ST : section time : indicate you when you break your best section time

Only for the style, those medails don't bring anything for the grad.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

IMO there should be at most a forum and a highscore forum. I mean, this is Tetris. We don't exactly have a lot to talk about so splitting into a dozen forums will leave a lot of them inactive, even with our increased membership.

A dozen is definitely excessive. Three or so is reasonable- perhaps one for the TGM series, one for SRS games (TDS, TE, etc.), and one for everything else? Just a thought.

I'm an admin, and I have the ability to implement any reasonable suggestion myself, but I'll wait for caffeine to sign off on something before I do anything drastic. Here's my suggestion:

Tetromino Games

Tetris Guideline

Discuss Tetris Worlds, Tetris Deluxe, Tetris DS, Tetris Evolution, and other official games made since 2001 (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php/Tetris_Guideline).

Tetris The Grand Master

Discuss Tetris games published by Arika and their predecessors published by Sega.

Classic Tetris

Discuss Tetris for Game Boy and other Tetris brand games.

Fan Games

Discuss puzzle games made by fans.

Et Cetera

Digressions can be healthy, but "don't break the law" and "don't be a jerk" still apply.

Well, if you do not split the forum into a couple of sub-forums, interesting topics with completed discussion will disappear really fastly.

Making more sub-forums does not have a negative effect on lisibility though, thanks to the phpbb basic functions such as "see posts since last visit"

Tetromino Games

Tetris Guideline
Tetris The Grand Master

Fan Games

Many fan games have ties to existing official games, like Heboris and Shimizu Tetris being related to Sega/TGM and Cultris paying tribute to Game Boy (18 cells high well). IMO grouping fan games into one category doesn't work well when discussing such games.

That and the increased complexity issue.

As you may recall, grade points decrease while a piece is active. So your late S1 is a result is a result of playing very slowly and also getting almost no tetrises. As you naturally speed up your play, you'll see a MASSIVE grade increase.

That's why I'm not worried about my S8 @ 9:05. I'm pretty sure that if I was playing fast enough to meet the 8:45 requirement, it would be S9.

well you have to take the screenshot with the field still visible or i have no idea how well you did... but if you're asking about order of grades, the secret grade is identical to the standard system (9-1-s1-s9-m-gm) and so, as far as that goes, no, that isn't any good. heh, but get a screenshot of the actual field! that can be so difficult... now, expert, would be completing it during the instant invis challenge after 999... any volunteers?

I just figured out the ranking system for it.

If you get all the way to the right, you get S rank.

For every space to the left, you go up one S rank.

If you get all the way to the left, you get GM.

Aaaaaaaargh !!! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
After watching mfm's vid jago has uploaded, I heard a voice in my head saying "hey ! that's a very strange way to play, so many holes that you fill, such a big pyramid, so many tetrises ! I wanna test !"

So I tried to build HUGE pyramids, fill holes and of course, didn't do much tetrises as I kinda always panic when I come at the top of the screen http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Arriving at 950, the stupid voice came back "come on, S4 only, DO MORE TETRISES". 996, game over http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif

PS: Yeah, I know, that's an incredibly slow game, but as I wanted to test mfm's style, I almost didn't lock in 20G mode.

PPS: doing tetrises in the 900~section seems to increase ultra fastly your rank, no ? went from S3 to S5

And nice work there cyberguile. I knew you'd shave off a serious chunk of time before long. I'm not sure how you're playing, but 700 speeds up quite a bit so you might want to play less aggressively beyond that for now. Which S5 do you want in the charts? If you do your calculation again, you'll see shaving those 90-100 seconds would put you at about 9:30, about where Amnesia is now. That's not a minute and a half... It's only 45 seconds away from M! (Though of course you also have to meet the 2 tetris per section/1:05 maximum section time requirements. I think you also need to complete the first 500 levels in 5:10 also, if my memory serves.)

Anyhow, here's something I wrote to Amnesia recently that I'll share in case it helps anyone:

All I've been doing is the same as the advice I gave you some time ago:

-Making sure that I completely charge DAS before the piece enters the screen so that it will start moving immediately. Not doing this will steal lots of your time if you're not careful.

-Making sure I place as many pieces as possible using DAS, using the techniques I showed you. Such as rotating or moving after hitting the wall.

-Making sure to not forget to play fast. This sounds stupid, but it is very easy to become lazy! Especially 600-699 and 800-899 I lose attention and "forget" I'm supposed to play fast. Instead I play at a slightly slower and comfortable speed.

Observation: The Master ranking is now strikingly similar to the Death ranking. cyberguile is 9th in both! kotetsu is 6th!

To translate from jago-speak to english: When he says "bored" he doesn't mean it is making him fall asleep or is trivial and beneath him. He means it is frustrating/aggravating/consuming him.

And I agree. Death mode is definitely the sexier challenge, but Master is what we'll be playing more in the long term. There's simply a LOT to it, not the least of which is the invisible challenge. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Maybe what I will say is useless, but I think you are slightly unbalanced with your S8 rank and your lv.395, I think a S8 player can reach minimu 420 in DEATH mode..

I don't know why, but I feel the good balance between the two mode is important..

Actually I work about a (useless http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif ) numerical and iterative algorithm to edit the perfect equivalences between, based only on statistics from the records of everybody, for example mfm is surely the most unbalanced player of everybody here..

Actually the equivalence gives that in my mind :

Master ----- T.A. DEATH

  Gm ---------- Gm
   m ----------  m
  S9 ---------- 500
  S8 ---------- 450
  S7 ---------- 410
  S6 ---------- 380
  S5 ---------- 350
  S4 ---------- 320
  S3 ---------- 300
  S2 ---------- 280
  S1 ---------- 250
   1 ---------- 210

Since I'm nearing M, I've looked up the special requirements. There's been a lot of hazy memories gradually distorting things, so I took the care to cross reference with actual videos and whatnot. This should be the most accurate description so far:

-all sections below 1:05
-2 tetrises each section from 0-699
-section 900-999 below 0:45
-S9 @ 999
-999 below 8:45

What should be "news" here is that 2 tetrises are only strictly required below 700. I believe this particular requirement has been described incorrectly from the beginning, and even this revised description needs further research before I'd say it's definitely true. But there's enough evidence to support it that I believe it for now. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Overall, I find this heartening news. It means I am closer to M than I thought. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I set a new 0-100 section time record!! (0:55:11)

This is special because it beats a record of my PCB's previous owner. This guy was good enough for M in 8:21... quite a bit better than me. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif It's the first Master Mode record of his I've beaten, so all the other section times below are his.

I played a little more today. I was still very unreliable, but I managed to crank out a new S8 record for me:

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/554/s884283vt5.jpg

This is notable because it is finally below the 8:45:00 time requirement! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif Also, it's only S8 because I, yet again, messed up the last section. I'm getting pretty sick of doing this, because it's not bad enough to kill me just ruin my rank. I think I'll start building high before entering the last section so I can get a couple quick tetrises in.

I also got a 999 S6 below 9 minutes, which was kind of funny.

It's unverified. Though I would be very surprised if more of the game was different than the m-roll conditions. On that note, what do people feel about TA vs TAP? They're not different enough to deserve their own charts... I vote we let the records mingle.

I'll admit I haven't been playing much lately...there have been multi-week breaks in my playing, plus there hasn't been much playing in the REST of the time. However, I did play enough to get pissed at the fact that S1 comes up around 550 and S2 never seems to come up...let me say that I really hate the fact that S2 doesn't appear for something like 200 more levels, and then several levels come one right after another. That's just wrong. Oh well, it makes this achievement look better than it really is:

For a while, I couldn't reach 500. With more single games than I could count in both TAP and Heboris UE, with all of the practice that I did in the latter, I just couldn't do it. Sometime later, I just halted all attempts and left it alone.

Then I came back to it today and:

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/7692/tgm20000qu4.png

It's really nothing special, yet it still feels like a big turning point for me. There's more to practice, more to learn, and more to advance to. I can't wait.

Now if I could only effectively fit my Tetris sessions in with my Natural Selection sessions...

I know exactly what you are talking about. Letting go for a while and coming back, making a surprise out of yourself. I think it is all about staying calm. I am often trying to simulate that feeling of calmness so that I can get farther without any vacations.

The main problem is, there is always a limit. And that limit seems to be my keyboard. I got so angry the other day I smashed it too hard. The computer froze, and I had to reboot, and even open the computer up and fix the graphics card. Not very smart.

TAP Master mode rules :

1 : Finish the game at lv. 999
2 : Reach lv. 999 under 8:45:00
3 : Reach lv. 999 with the S9 rank
4 : Do the first 5 sections (000-500) under 1:05:00
5 : Do the last section (900-999) under 0:45:00
6 : Do at least 2 tetrises in the 5 first sections (000-500)
7 : Do at least 1 tetrises in the 4 following sections (500-900)
8 : Survive the invisible section at the staff roll during 1min

I am sure I have respected the 7 first conditions but no invisible challenge.. Amnesia, the conditions for the m-roll are more subtle than those stated by LOst (http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=548). I don't know the exact details, but I think that a section time must not be much slower than the previous one. For example, 900-999 cannot be more than 2 seconds slower than 800-900, and 800-900 cannot be more than 2 seconds slower than 700-800. Reset your section time records using Maintenance Code: 4-1-7-6-5, and then try again. If you don't get the instant invisible challenge, check your times, I can guarantee it's because you slowed down a lot from one section to the next.

Note that reseting the section time records affects all the players on your TAP system... Which is a wierd condition for m-roll achieved by 1 player?

Also being forced to outperform previous section times must have the same effect while cheating as when playing. I am sure Amnesia went for the fastest finish time while cheating. He still has to beat a hidden section time limit of 1 min and 5 seconds.

Section times are compared once entering a new section, and when entering level 999. The current section time is compared to a constant value. I haven't found any evidence that the game is checking previous section times, or the section time records as you claim. But as you said, "I don't know the exact details". If you feel like owning me, just give me an inp file showing a failure of "just" your described condition. Something I doubt you will be able to do.

I promise you that if there is another condition, I will most likely find it in a near future. But for the already stated conditions by me, they are correct.

I read it as if your own 700-800 time is 46 seconds, your own 800-900 time can't be longer than 48 seconds. Clearing the section time records just helps you diagnose this problem.

I read it as if your own 700-800 time is 46 seconds, your own 800-900 time can't be longer than 48 seconds. Clearing the section time records just helps you diagnose this problem.

Thanks for re-phrasing, that's exactly what I meant.

LOst, my apologies if I've offended you, I realise you must be proud of discovering the m-roll conditions, and I didn't intend to dispute your claims. I didn't think it was worth recording an "only I piece cheat" video, but I hope you find this useful:

I played through the game using only I pieces, and made a save state in the final section so I could go back and complete it slightly slower.

With a replay similar to Edo's S9, I'm sure we could learn the exact conditions inhibiting M/Gm here. As well as any further unknown conditions in surrounding code. Any volunteers?

Being able to find one more condition is not the same as correcting someone elses found conditions. It sounded for a while like you stated that I was incorrect in some way. Thank you for your clarification!

The keyboard offers a lot of advantages : mainly the precision, but you will never perform the "drop/lock" as fast as me, jago and c_t..

How many time do you do usually at lv. 500 ?

No pb in TGM1 and TAP Death of course.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

i screwed up and deleted my inp file... so we'll never know how fast my 500 was, but i will tell you that i'm getting early sections consistently under 1 minute. 58 0-100 on that game if i remember correctly, and i don't feel that the up down is limiting my game in any significant way, i do it in one motion anyway.

Rosti LFC

I don't see how a joystick can be that much faster than simply flicking my finger off the up key onto the down in one movement. Certainly not enough to make a difference compared to other ways to play faster (finesse, no mistakes, x99 line clears etc).

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m313/rostilfc/Masterbest-3.png

Really annoying thing is that I could have done even better. The nerves sort of got to me when I hit S4, because I was on a really good run and the level was pretty low. Then mistakes slowed me down and brought me to the top half of the field, and I was really just trying to recover after that.

The up down motion can be remedied quite easily as it's just an inconvenient hard drop. However, finesse with firm drop and ARS is a different matter. The real advantage joysticks have over keyboards is the ability to perform zangi placements with one swift motion. You now not only have free-fall finesse and wallkick finesse, but also zangi finesse. jin8 gracefully demonstrated all three of these in his GM video.

Haven't played for aaaaages.

Yesterday, tried a couple of games at my friend's home just after watching France Beating The All-Blacks (!!!) and beat my record on the first one http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif moreover with a control pad !

S7, 11min26, 999.

Worst is that I was comfortable in the last section and did three tetris.

But before 700 I played so poorly (kinda "didn't play for long so keep cool, don't build too high") that I only got S7. A shame you didn't reached 700, your stack was really low at 652.

Some (a lot of) comments:

Level 303

http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru303a.pnghttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru303b.png
When you're building, you should really really think "What piece can I place in that hole ?" and place it immediately when it is distributed. In that case, there's only the J and I piece that can fill that hole. J is IMO the best piece to place and you didn't it.

Level 332

http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru332a.pnghttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru332b.png
I think it's possible (with DAS) to place that Z to the right, which is a much better position than the other one.

Level 375

http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru375a.pnghttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru375b.png
There's something I learned from TDS wifi, and that is that non-overstacking construction (http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/../wiki/index.php?title=Non-overstacking_construction) (caffein would say "look below (http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/../old.html)") often makes the difference between life and death. I would have placed the to the right, because this line

http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/kitaru375c.gif
is the first obstacle that prevents you from cleaning your stack.

Notice that you did just fine, but that might be of some use in 20G.

There's a non obvious at all but still very useful wallkick with the L piece. That you could have used.

The panel of move increase alone with the practicing kitaru, but you can improve faster by the forced training, try to do some Master mode very slow, not to attempt a new record like we always use to do, but just for the analysis of the best placements..And you have a lot of good explanation with the tool, in the past I have watched a lot of time every japan videos which were available.

I will finish it one time before chrismas..

Actually you manage the semi invible better than me..

I can sometime finish it with a constant and agressive manual locking..

Another interesting detail, I fell the same difficulty in invisible with a manual locking and without it..

The lack of accuracy due to the speed is balanced with the fact that precedent tetriminos stay more in my mind thank to the speed..

The best strategy is to build a first Tetris, then we must try to let the last column free in hoping to put a "I" when we can..I am working about it.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

CORRECTION :

I will be honest for the invisible challenge..Yesterday I decided to learn the music by heart, just to be able to know exactely the time. (there is no time for the invisible section) For each main part of the music, I know now the exact time corresponding, so my current record is 38 sec, done around 4-5 times..

Yesterday evening, on my best attempt : I did 1 tetris, then 1 double, few singles, I stayed very low during a good moment..Then I disrupted sadly my stack because of too much concentration in the begining..Result --> 38sec again.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

I can do that after this training :

From end of August to now --> 25min/week

From now to my first success --> 25min/day

I'll hit grade 1 long before I hit level 500, but I'll usually screw up at some point between 500 and 700, which is what I think is costing me so much. It's hard to concentrate purely on Tetrises after level 750 when you're already halfway up the field because of mistakes.

very regular and safety, 90% of my max speed before 500, and after : it is for the pleasure and..for the m rank! I play as fast as I can with my hands the most possible relaxed..Trying to play for the pleasure of the speed and not to beat a record..That seems to works very well..

New best: S7, 976, 10min31

You are much faster than me when I finished the first time the master mode, I remember it was around 11:20 at S7 as well..

I'm going to guess it's just a slightly faster S9 than mine.
