Hi

I was wondering if any videos of this mode being completed exist. The idea of sounds like a very interesting game, but without any visual evidence to back it up, it's hard to tell...

Hope you can help

None that I am aware of.

It's quite fun. After I get my TGM2 Gms I think I'll try to complete Doubles alone. Currently I practice for this by playing VS against my friends using only one hand as a handicap. I still usually win. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

Whoa!

With one hand??

I havn't understood exactly what you said lardarse (end of sentence)

I'm wondering how you will end the double mode alone colour_thief, maybe you are strong but don't exaggerate!! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I begin to have a good experience on double mode even I've never successed..Our best lv are 300 for me and 278 for a friend..

I must precise there is a big proportion of psycology, it's not necessary to try with a friend who is very strong like you..My best friend is S5 (good...I think..) and with me it's a catastrofic duet..

But my best score has been realized with a medium friend (grad 3) , because with this configuration (Gm1 and medium) , you can deal the role : one manageur and one subordinated, an organisation is possible...

Maybe it's not the best opinion but...

I begin to have a good experience on double mode even I've never successed..Our best lv are 300 for me and 278 for a friend..

That's the mode where the first side to get to 300 gets 20G until the other side gets to 300 right?

colour_thief
10-05-2006, 09:20 PM
That is correct.

And I'm not some one-handed playing god... It's just that my friend is not that good. I forget what by best single player Doubles Mode score is, but I know it was above 200-200. But further impovements would be... very difficult. As you know the speed increases dramatically at that point, especially if you're playing at the minimum pace.

<Edit>

I just checked and my best is 211-202.

How the hell do you play one handed? use 4 keys (like WASD) with Q and E for rotate? And then doing that twice???

Any chance you could provide a movie of you doing this please? I'd like to see it...

And as for explaining what I said... There are very few puzzle games that work well with 2 players. There are even less where the 2 players have to work together.

colour_thief: Can you get one side to 300 without the other side dying? If so, how long does it take?

colour_thief
10-05-2006, 10:00 PM
I think I could get one side to 300, but the other wouldn't even be close. And my above mentioned record took... 7 minutes I think?

And I'm playing this using joysticks on an actual TGM2 machine. I've got big hands, and still usually only use one rotation button.

A great 2 player cooperative puzzle game is Uo Poko by Cave. I wouldn't recommend single player, but team play is interesting.

Colour_thief,

You should try to beat your friends with...your feet! It's really easy with your Joystick (I've seen its on a photo)

It's not a joke! It's really interesting..

Amnesia
12-18-2006, 02:59 PM
Yeah!

But it's realLy less impressing than your score 228-228...

HOW do you do with your left hand?? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
To move and rotate??

I'm happy for my double because I formed my friend in few months and he is only S1 on TAP and S3 on tgm1..

I think if one day we meet, you and me, we could easily do it in 4min30..

Do you know the "Campus de l’Université du Québec en Outaouais"?

I will do my master here in 2008 or 2009..

colour_thief
12-18-2006, 10:18 PM
I rotate with my thumb on my left hand. I can only reach the first counter-clockwise A button. If I really want to rotate clockwise, and I do this only when I absolutely must, I have to let go of the joystick to hit the B button.

I have not heard of that place, but Outaouais is very far from Toronto. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif Also, I have no idea where I'll be living in 2008-2009.

maybe for most of people that are playing on "MAME" the use of a psx adaptator can be useful.

example layout

left cross for p1 direction

right button for p2 direction

L1-L2 trigger for p1 rotation

R1-R2 trigger for p2 rotation

maybe direction for p2 "may be difficult" to handle at start, but playing both player "may be difficult" by nature...

or maybe like this :

I love that video. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif That's actually what is inspiring me to try solo Doubles. His buttons are closer to his joysticks though, so he can reach better. I don't mind that extra inconvenience though, because it means I could theoretically walk up to a machine in a random arcade and play it just fine.

Anyone know of a url to a (preferably English) guide of how the Vs. mode on TGM works?

I've tried it with a friend, but it seemed a bit random and we couldn't figure out much of what was happening.

colour_thief
12-21-2006, 10:22 PM
Nobody's really into it... I don't even know of a Japanese guide. But here goes:

The goal is to either get to the level cap first (very rare), be closer to the level cap when the time expires (somewhat rare), or kill your opponent (the usual way). For every piece you place you charge item bar, so faster players will get special items more often. You'll note that whatever line you clear, your opponent will receive it minus the piece you used to clear it. So:

-The special items are random.

-The garbage is 100% controlled.

Basically: play fast, and go for advantageous line clears if that's an option.

Ezzelin

How do you mean the garbage is defined?

The garbage in DuelTris (Apple IIGS) proceeds like this, and I think Bloxeed and TGM work the same way:

|          | |          |

|    SS   I| |          |
|     S   I| | Z   I    |

|TTT S   LI| |ZZS  ILOOJ|
|JTZZSSOOLI| |ZTSS ILOOJ|

|         I| |JTZZ  OOLI|
|TTT S   LI| |JJJZZ OOLL|

Notice how the lines added to player 2's field are identical to those that player 1 cleared.

It encourages players to break a streak of back-to-back tetrises in the same rectum (http://www.arkmay.com/tetris/moves.html), as they'd just send the same blocks back and forth. But something like this wouldn't work for Nintendo-style 2-player, where the number of lines cleared is greater than (double, triple) or less than (B2B tetris, t-spin, B2B t-spin) the number of garbage lines sent.

Co-op is much harder than it looks. We couldn't divide our field in half since my brother can't stack flat enough to avoid gaps. So...we just decided to play in sync with each other's thoughts... http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

I think DIGITAL has formed his little brother as I formed Bou, in order to have a "sub-clone" with the same reflexes and techniques..

But mfm I would like to see me too, when you want* we can organize a meeting in Paris with Jago.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

On the reverse end, my little brother is terrible with keyboard tetris. He doesn't even use firm drop haha. I need to get him a gamepad if I want to get sub 5 minutes. Right now, I'm the one doing the most work building.

I know just what you mean! When I play with my housemate, he's player 2 and we try to keep the tetris hole on the right as per usual. He gets all the line clear bonuses and I stack faster than him to even it out. Of course, he's still too weak for us to make it... I think our closest was something like 290-280 (I count that closer than 300-280).

What I like about Amnesia/Bou is their video shares the work pretty evenly, even though Amnesia is the stronger player. It's nice to see. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

To complete your post and DIGITAL's, we divide the work it 2:

Bou : bulding and clear almost all lines..(to get bonus lines)

Me : Bulding as fast as I can and check the good bulding of the total stack(check the balance of levels, manage the game and correct the bou's mistakes ==> that decrease my speed because of the reflexion..)

Bou is too fast, sometimes I do few triple or tetris to balance the 2 levels..

Expect a video, "soonish". http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif I'm afraid it slaughtered our previous high score of over 6 minutes, Needle. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif

Also I couldn't help but notice that there's a green line under the record... Could it be that surviving the credits earns you an orange line? Something to think about. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif Never give up!

I loved the teamwork between you and cgwg. The shared zangis/wallkicks are fun to watch. I do that all the time when playing with my brother but he gets really surprised when I do them at high speeds.

You guys nearly died a couple of times but miraculously got down since you were playing in sync. I envy you since my brother starts panicking at the top. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Nice job keeping your levels so close. I often end up with a difference of 20-30 levels playing with my brother and have to actually slow down my stacking. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

The 20G portion was hilarious though. I wish there was a standalone mode for 20G Doubles.

The video has been updated. Mono sound is now mono instead of coming out of the left speaker only. Play area was cropped and resized properly, making things more clear and giving a proper aspect ratio. Also the deinterlacing is much improved, somehow, even though I didn't change anything that should affect that.

So far on Kaillera mine and Digital's best record is 5:30 (for both at 300)

We had one looking to be about 5 mins, but we screwed up and lost.

The lag probably doesn't help with the speed. I also reckon we'd be a lot faster if we had the ability to talk to each other.

Still, it was only like our 6th attempt ever.

just a quick question - is there some (minor maybe) line clear delay in doubles? i.e. is it faster to do tetrises or just do alot of singles, etc?

I don't think there is. Certainly not enough to make a real difference to your time.

gila

any particular tips to improve time in doubles then?

Rosti LFC
11-04-2007, 04:54 AM
You both need to stack as fast as you can, but also try and maintain similar levels. This can be done by having the faster player do most of the stacking, and leave the tetris-clearing to the slower player.

I'd still say Tetrises are faster than singles, simply because if a line is cleared while you're placing a piece it can throw you off, as the lock delay will be reset as the stack falls away from the piece.

Basically though, fast, mistake free stacking is key. Keep to your own side of the screen unless it's necessary. Not only is it easier when you keep out of each other's way, but DAS-ing across is difficult to do with finesse and precision unless you're moving against the far wall.

And the most important, I discussed with colour_thief during our session, you must keep a permanent observation and analyse of the game of your partner..Both players must do it..

Not so easy for myself and Digital to do on our laggy Kaillera server with no way of communicating. We basically have to rely on telepathy for what the other played wants to do.

Actually, words are almost never spoken in real life either. You learn to read each other's minds, completing each other's thoughts.

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but the biggest, most important thing to do is learning to stick to your side. If you really must place pieces on the other side of the screen, pay attention and time it carefully so that you are out of your partner's way. Preferably, you should zoom in there while he's locking a piece. The key to a fast time, however, is stacking well enough to never leave your side.

I don't often watch inp replays because my home computer does not emulate TAP at full speed. As for my sticks, they are the exact same quality as in a well kept Japanese arcade. I have both Seimitsu and Sanwa sticks in my machine.

I am attempting a little demonstration to deduct the best potential time for two players with same SKill for the sub 20G..

Objectif --> sub 3:20 (world record = 3:22)

Info :

-colour_thief : 0-100 --> 53,75

-Amnesia : 0-100 --> 53,9

(base : ~55sec --> 1,3 tm/s) <---- Ra(tm/s) = 5.Lv / 7.t

Problematic :

MASTER 300 --> ~2:45

DOUBLE 300s --> ~???

Main hypothesis :

-no block at all at the end

-no hesitation (perfect game)

-instant sideway speed

-no lost time at 300 (both at 300 at the same time)

Data :

              |  DOUBLE  |  MASTER  |
              |          |          |
Matrix size   |    14    |    10    |
              |          |          |
Tet/lines     |   3.5    |   2,5    |
              |          |          |
Rate (tm/s)   |   2.6    |   1,3    |
              |          |          |
Levels        |   600    |   300    |
              |          |          |
Line C D (fr) |     0 fr |    40 fr |
              |          |          |
ARE           |    25 fr |    25 fr |

I can't find these following values for the Double mode :

ARE and Line Cl

(hypothesis : DAS is including in ARE and lock delay is reduced to 0)

Is it good for that ? -->

Master 0-300 --> ARE : 25 ; Line Cl : 40

Double 0-300 --> ARE : 25 ; Line Cl : 0

http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_question.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_question.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_question.gif

colour_thief
03-27-2008, 05:29 PM
I think you mean line clear delay, not lock delay. Lock delay is definitely not 0.

Amnesia
03-27-2008, 05:32 PM
ofcourse, but I start with the hypothesis that our drop/lock is 100% efficient !

colour_thief
03-28-2008, 03:02 AM
So do you know the right calculations?

(300/3.5) * 2.5 = 215 pieces minimum to reach 300 in Master.

(600/4.5) * 3.5 = 467 minimum pieces played to reach 300 in Doubles.

(~234 per player)

Also, consider that there are fewer fast time attack moves available because of the larger shared screen. Each player only gets 1 wall to DAS against and must more often double or triple tap. This will make tm/s slower than Master on average.

If we use your estimate of 1.3 tm/s per player, we are looking at a clear time of 3 minutes. To get a clear time of 3:20, we would need a speed of ~1.17 tm/s per player.

Amnesia
03-28-2008, 03:30 AM
Sorry, I had just put the hypothesis without finished my calculation..

Maybe I will continue to think a bit later about it..But your result seems logical.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

I am also thinking about the best strategy of building stack and lines, in the center in my opinion..It should reduce the tap tap tap inconvenient..

To perform a "semi full DAS" until the center of the matrix is not so hard..

There is no need to favorise a side for lines because we can play as fast..

Anyway, 1,17 tm/s is not really impossible..If we admit our brains are 99% connected.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
I am sure with an intense practice of 2 days, we can be almost perfectly synchrone..

And I was expecting that edo bring his support also for the calculation..

colour_thief
03-28-2008, 05:55 AM
I am also thinking about the best strategy of building stack and lines, in the center in my opinion..It should reduce the tap tap tap inconvenient..

Another idea I had was to place the hole on the right, with lines cleared by player 2. BUT! Player 1 would use only very fast moves, and player 2 would use slower moves to place pieces in the centre. With the lines given to player 2, it would balance out.

But I think that both of our ideas are biased in terms of thinking of a "long game". What is very important is keeping the screen low, so maybe the best strategy instead is for both players to clear any line, "freestyle".

Amnesia
03-28-2008, 06:32 AM
Freestyle is better for top speed but it is a bit more open for opportunity to mistakes..mistakes of placement and mistakes of bad synchronisme..

I like your idea, it is well thought, but the player who plays on the left, with 5-6 squares to build will often need to put away a tetriminos (to avoid mistakes) and can disrupt the organization of the right player..

We are in the good way if we think about it now..We just have to practice TAP sub-20G before we meet, I will take 10 days or 2 weeks to practice intensively I think..I hope 3 days will be enough to set a record..

The detail which scares me the most is my tetlag on your stick.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Wow, impressive. How new to TGM?
When my brother and I tried texmaster doubles, it took us over 7 minutes to clear it together. Granted, he hasn't touched tetris since the NES days...

And an unrelated question: what are the speed timings for doubles? I'm guessing ARE, DAS, Lock, and Clear are 25, 16, 30, and 0 frames respectively, but gravity doesn't follow either Normal or Master modes (and data are not on the wiki).

Wow! interesting to watch. It looks like you solved the level problem by letting her do most of the line clears, which results in level bonus that actually keeps her level ahead of yours. Next stop: clearing the credit roll http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

Extremely new to TGM and otherwise almost virgin to Tetris. She has reached 500 in Ti Master, but can't come close in TAP. And she's only done it once and got torikan stopped.

It feels like the Normal curve at first, except the speed doesn't reset to near-zero at Lv200 again. It just continues to increase. So it's not exactly like Normal. I should probably graph it and put it on the wiki.

Line clear delay is effectively zero. Do not be afraid to make singles. Better to keep the playfield spotlessly clean (ha!) than to stack for tetrises.

Ah, I see.

Thanks for the tidbit, DeHackEd. I was originally doing that but when I looked at Kitaru's side, I saw how he was stacking it for Tetrises. He being the better player, I copied him and starting stacking for Tetrises as well (I'm more partial to combo-ing, tbh).

I spoke with Kitaru on this and apparently, he was doing this in consideration of my slow and unskillful playing. :(

Kitaru
06-29-2010, 01:26 PM
I'm not 100% sure whether or not it is something new now. I think I got the weird gravity/lock delay cancel bug, tried to mash down out of it, got delayed by it, and then managed to mash the pieces into the stack when they finally did spawn. It seemed to last longer than your standard gravity freeze when I was playing it, but I could be wrong.

Kitaru
06-30-2010, 08:02 AM
A G is a unit of speed measurement in rows fallen per frame. 1G means that every frame of game logic, the piece falls one row. In Master, the game reaches 1G at level 251. TAP starts at 1/64 G, which is about one second between drops. If you want to see the speed of 1G, press down; the soft drop accelerates to 1G, provided the game isn't already faster than that at the moment.

TWF
06-30-2010, 10:03 PM
This is something I've been wondering about: how do TGM games treat soft drop at speeds greater than 1G? Does it affect the drop speed at all?

Kitaru
06-30-2010, 10:37 PM
Does it affect the drop speed at all?
Nope, although I think there was some soft drop anomaly in TGM1 that could delay gravity by a frame or something wonky. You'd have to ask nightmareci or look at his notes.

I changed my mind. You guys aren't allowed to complete it before I complete it with both of you. :(

TWF's girlfriend Samael

So Samael is a girl, and the girlfriend of TWF...
ha, the world is small.
I have seen The name "Samael" plenty of time in some tetris place ignoring this.

or when I chose it, "angel of death." I thought I *could* be good at death one day and then my name would have meaning! Look where that's gotten me... (nowhere)

I thought Shirase was your big thing... you know, having your birthday on 2/28 and all, and fighting me about not wanting to play TGM1 because you wanted to play Sudden Ti instead :P

I don't think I've ever seen her play shirase... and since I have control of the sudden ti leaderboard I'd have added her if I saw a score.

and at 2:28pm! but...my birth certificate says 2:30. bad fate I guess :(

and with all seriousness, I'll eventually work my way towards Ti (after I get S9 in Master and 500 in death, perhaps? ^_^)

New record by DDRKirby(ISQ) and imiganai

Took a LOT of tries but we finally got a clear =D

We recorded the .inp (http://www.mediafire.com/?s7u9vsbgz13w9hu) but unfortunately it gets that "out of sync" error whenever we try to play it back. We were recording using the linux version of 0.133 tgmshmupmame...is this an nvram/cfg file issue or something? (i don't remember whether you have to do anything special with those when you record .inps)

Yes, always back-up your NVRAM before recording so you can playback with the same randomizer seed. You can make a convenient script to automate the process of making a copy of tgm2p.nv, starting MAME for the recording, then timestamping and/or zipping the files.

speaking of mame scripts, here is my pro as hell setup:

recordplay-fullscreen.bat
for /f "tokens=1,2,3 delims=/ " %%a in ('DATE /T') do set date=%%a-%%b-%%c
for /f "tokens=1,2 delims=: " %%a in ('TIME /T') do set time=%%a-%%b

copy /y nvram\%1.nv nvram\last-%1.nv

mametgm.exe %1 -record last-%1.inp

"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a "inp\%1-%date%-%time%.7z" inp\last-%1.inp nvram\last-%1.nv

recordplay-windowed.bat
for /f "tokens=1,2,3 delims=/ " %%a in ('DATE /T') do set date=%%a-%%b-%%c
for /f "tokens=1,2 delims=: " %%a in ('TIME /T') do set time=%%a-%%b

copy /y nvram\%1.nv nvram\last-%1.nv

mametgm.exe %1 -record last-%1.inp -window

"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a "inp\%1-%date%-%time%.7z" inp\last-%1.inp nvram\last-%1.nv

It was on the one day I didn't bring my flash drive though, so we couldn't record it.

Well, this sucks. My SD card in my phone is still retarded after reformatting, so I don't have the clear pic from when Jerycho and I played around a week ago. Well, put a Kitaru 300-300 Jerycho @ 6:--:-- up there, I guess. We've also had some faster failed runs, so I'll try to get an accurate report next time we have a completion.

We have a inp this time. This was done during our final day in the same free block at school. I guess I'll probably not have as many chances to play doubles with her now but I'm pretty happy with the time.
