I'll give it a shot when I have my VSHG. Right now I think one-handed keyboard playing would be a lot harder.

Yesterday evening, I played better with one hand than 2.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I am very closed to the 0-100 @ 45sec with one hand know..And 1:35 at 200..

But it is still impossible to lock at 300.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

been a while since i tried this style of play but after about 30 minutes it felt good. i used to play doubles in Tetris Unlimited and Tengen Tetris by myself. it's a lot of fun, and with good planning and timing you have a nice spot for each piece.

btw Tetris Unlimited lets you play triples and quadruples if you can handle it. triples actually works if you use single rotation, left, right, down for each piece. of course, you need a keyboard. i believe i used qwer, tycm, uiop. i never made it very far but it was still fun.

Yes and no. Not to downplay jujube's achievement, but playing Doubles with joysticks is significantly more challenging. If I could play on a keyboard with easy access to all inputs at all times, I doubt it would take long for me to get the 300-300.

How do people want to handle this? Especially with something like Death mode, if I was using a keyboard one-handed it would be a complete joke and barely different than standard play.

jujube
01-02-2008, 05:10 AM
as far as "one-handed" goes, i don't see playing solo doubles that way. you could mix the controls and rotate both pieces with one hand, and use your other hand for left-right or whatever. to me it's just about controlling both pieces at the same time.

and with joysticks, even single player, don't you have to make more extreme movements with your hand all the time? if using a keyboard is an advantage when playing doubles or one-handed, isn't it also an advantage when playing single player with both hands (a smaller advantage)?

i pretty much agree that using a keyboard is easier in this case (if not in all cases) so seperate away. but if you want a challenge with the keyboard i'm taking it http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif ...and i just added firm drop to my controls http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

colour_thief
01-02-2008, 05:43 AM
I agree that solo Doubles is very much about controlling 2 pieces at once, but in my opinion there's more to it.

When you use a joystick with both hands, all the controls are still "at the tip of your fingers" like a keyboard. If you want to get anal both input devices have slight functional differences, but it's close enough to have a competition.

When you control 2 joysticks, or a single joystick with one hand, suddenly things moves become physically difficult to execute. You've got to stretch your hand in a contorted position, and even then no matter what you do there are holes of input coverage not unlike when you have 4 fingers to cover 5 buttons in Guitar Hero. There is an added deep learning curve for controlling things with carefully managed "blind spots". Eventually, your hands never get disoriented, and even though you can't have everything at your fingertips, you will be able to have everything you need at the time at your fingertips.

Maybe I'm a masochist, but both layers of challenge appeal to me.

after all, the game was designed to be played on an arcade machine. i respect anyone who plays the game as closely as possible to that, if not actually playing it on an arcade machine. that being said, i'm gonna do the best i can on a keyboard. and i also have this (http://techdigestuk.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/x_arcade_cen_500_3510.jpg) which i plan to use more often at some point. i need to switch both sticks to 4-way though, which i've been slacking on.

jujube
01-02-2008, 10:35 AM
ok, got my sticks converted to 4-way and played for a while.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3287/joy241225nb3.jpg
the time is not good but i'm starting to get used to the controls.

i'm not sure if i'll be as fast with sticks but i think 300/300 is a real possibility. it felt really awkward but i think the way you look at the game and the decisions you make are the same no matter what the control device. it's just a matter of executing accurately and quickly enough. and i'll be honest, i only made it this far because i was at the bottom when i hit 200.

jujube

woot, someone else is playing http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I don't have a second stick to play with.

yeah, unfortunately i'm sure most people don't. it's just as much fun i think on a keyboard though. i bought this gigantic freakin x-arcade thing because i wanted a stick, but at the time thought i might build a cabinet to put it in. didn't happen. but i might as well use this thing anyway http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

No luck from me today, but I got 299-299 twice. My best time was 6:13, only 20 seconds slower than SQR. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif I'm sure it will take a lot of work to beat him, but it feels like I'm close because I shave off 10 seconds everytime I play. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

6:13 is also faster than I was able to complete it with Needle, a couple years ago. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif I blame the sleep deprivation.

By the way, how often do you play solo Doubles?

I'm playing this less seriously than Master and T. A. Death modes... Maybe, Doubles:others might be 1:10 (or less often).
For example, when I feel exhausted in playing Master and Death (they keep my arms, fingers, and shoulders very strained!) and would like to lessen the stress, I try it a few times to ease my wrists. It works so-so for relaxing, but being still challenging.
Today, I had enough time to play TGM series thoroughly, so I might have played Doubles relatively more often.

Considering the intense speed you exhibit in your Death videos, I can imagine how you might get very strained. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif How much effort would you say you put into a game of Doubles? What record should we expect if you took it more seriously? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

First, thank you for understanding "stressing" moves. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Well, speaking of the "effort," I have to explain the uniqueness of operations in this mode.
Typically, a well-trained TGM player thinks of optimization of tetramino moves, causing highly frequent Zangi-moves, speedy slidings, frame synchronizations (http://www13.plala.or.jp/TETRiS_TGM/kouza/12.htm) and/or some other finesses. Of course these operations impose a huge burden (physically and mentally).
However, my optimization in Doubles is hardly or never established, because the width of field is 14, two blocks fall from different positions, these blocks collide each other, etc. It's ENTIRELY different from usual games. Thus, to avoid misdrops, the movements become the succession of only very simple moves: The rotation button is mostly fixed to counter-clockwise (unless it wouldn't fit), side movements become step-by-step to aim the correct drop position -- this eventually prevents sudden and stressful movements.

Finally, I don't know how I could improve and even I could continue to put energy into it...; if some of us will find a decent, practicable (and easy-to-master) optimization in Doubles mode, things may change drastically. But sorry, I have no idea currently. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Congratulations! I'm very happy to see you are still working on this. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

You can count on it! I'll try and get a video camera to show my hands.

On the topic of personal bests in Ti, I was looking at your records page:
http://abomination.jp/TGM.html

I noticed your newest Ti records are over 1 year old. Have you stopped playing this game? Because I am sure you could do much better than Shirase S9 now.

Well... Actually, I'm just resumed playing Shirase in ARS mode though in a quite slow pace. Recently I hit some 800-ish games in Shirase(C), so if my concentration kept better, I would update my TI records. I've been so despondent in TI's 3-next-with-a-hold system and extremely low-parameter environments after 600 level, but I try not to hasten, but to keep a controllable rhythm in this case.
On the other hand, SRS, is perfectly forgotten. (My objective to play World Rule has been fulfilled since a player achieved a sub-5 Shirase(W) run. It was fun but not my business, and all in all, I'm ARS-oriented player...)

I realize I come to be able to handle sonic drops with less failures...
Here, we'll expect a sub-5:30 game, so I have to imagine that (a bit more) seriously. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

That is insane! Congrats SQR and I wish you good luck getting under 05:30.

I've seen a colour_thief video where he plays TGM one-handed and I can't comprehend how you guys do it. When I become a more decent player I will definitely try to play some one-handed TGM.

Even though I could make it in TGM, it will take much time to learn finesse in 20G environments.

It's this year's last post, though leaving many months away:

Doubles
SQR-------------300 @ 05:34:83 @ 300-----------SQR (26, Dec. 2009)

The remaining objective in solo doubles is to be able to deal with the insanely difficult 280Lv.+ part of the game. Only the best finish move makes the best game.

...Anyway, may 2010 be a great year for all of you!

Congrats! That TGM improvement of almost a minute is indeed incredibly fast. You also cleared your objective of getting sub 05:30 in Doubles. ^^

SQR, that is truly incredible. What is your two-handed TGM time?

He posted a video on youtube with a time of 9:25:73 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqp7tD44Hgo). That was summer last year though so he could have improved. At the time he was aiming for a time under 09:20 to be among a select group of elite players.

It might be a very good news for you that Pier21 started on-board video recording today and I joined it for a right hand TGM performance, hitting 10:21. Currently I don't know they'll upload the video in a partial or a full run (because it exceeds 10 minutes, the limit length in YT), but you will witness how to recover the field with only one hand. If it's on the web I will attach the link on this post. I'm sorry for I'm not able to show a prove yet, but please look forward...

--------
[EDIT]
Pier21's on-board video was up! Please watch out their user channel.
channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/pier21kodaira
and mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lR5CwRiZx8

Every player has a 3-minute video on that day, and my one features level 720 to the finish. It was an occasional event and videos are not entire games from the beginning. (They had once held the same event previously, and each player's play length was about 2 minutes or so.)
However it's enough to estimate my performance, and please enjoy!

Although the officially stated limit on YouTube videos is 10 minutes, one is actually allowed 10:59 per video. As long as it doesn't roll over to 11 minutes, it is okay.
