Any chance you can pull mine until I have a more determined chance tonight? I wanna start my target-chasing on a clean slate. For me that means going for more "normal" rules than my casual playing.

it has to be good for speed, right? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif it works ok with 20G, only you have to change the way you stack a little. if you want to try it just set the speed curve on death and lock delay on never. then you can take your time while learning how you have to stack to survive.
then if you get lucky your stack is low when you've finished 40 lines http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

what's active minute? can't find it in the manual.
you can find keys per second by (kpt*tpm)/60. my idea is that kps has a lot to do with success in forty lines. my record shows about 8 kps, and jono has 9.5 kps. reivilo, you are pressing over 14 keys a second! that's crazy. can we see a replay?
jujube
05-28-2007, 10:59 PM
when DIGITAL and i were compiling the stats here we weren't 100% on reivilo's kpt because it seems so high. it's possible 6.78 is accurate, but if you watch 2 lockjaw replays in a row the kpt stat after the 2nd replay reflects the number of keys pressed from both games, which could explain this. then again, he might be superman http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5A4Oy7q3-Fs
in Rosti's 3rd game here his kpt was 16.99.

Active time is when you're not waiting for line clear delay, cascade delay (in non-naive gravity modes), and ARE. This then lets you calculate a "Quadra TPM".

I use ARS (no tetlag from TGM) and I use the standard Exponential curve.
This leader-board might rekindle my LJ playing. I'd not touched it in a while.
For the record you show, my KPT was 3.26 and the date was 2007-04-10

Im guessing this is just for 40 line high scores on lockjaw, is there a place for marathon scores?

For marathon, you'd definitely need a separate table for each combination of scoring method and speed curve.

We can always just standardize the scoring method and the speedcurve. Nick had something going in this thread.

There's no other trick to playing fast that I know of. It's just a skill that comes with practice.

The easiest way for us to know would be for you to post your score, with or without a replay.

Played 218 tetrominoes (72.66 per minute
This is part of your problem. A lot of people on this board can drop tetrominoes much faster than 72 per minute. For instance, T.A. Death in TAP (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=TAP) requires the player to process at least 105 tetrominoes per minute; otherwise, the game will stop (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=Torikan) at the halfway point.
Pressed 822 keys (3.77 per tetromino)
If you decrease keys per tetromino (see finesse (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=Movement_Finesse) on wiki), you can increase tetrominoes per minute.

More back-to-back home runs (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tetris_Stacking) and fewer singles would improve your score. Try concentrating on making more garbage per minute for a few games. You might want to consider learning T-spin setups as well so that you can keep getting the 200 point back-to-back bonus while clearing out garbage; see Twist (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=Twist#Twists_with_T_.28or_T-Spin.29) and T-Spin methods (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=T-Spin_methods) on the wiki, and see a YouTube video demonstrating lots of consecutive home runs in Lockjaw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbRC_sde2MQ).

Bit of a milestone for me, because for a long time, I felt that my kpm was limited to about 240, meaning that even if I could get my kpt down, I still wouldn't be able to get past a certain point. This run is the first time I've ever hit 280kpm.

I wish know your point of view DIGITAL, about the difference between DEATH and LOCKJAW, on DEATH my record of speed is :
lv. 100 in 39 sec so :
~28 lines in 39 sec ---> 40 lines in 55 sec
It's not very bad I think because japan do lv. 100 in 36 sec for best..
Can we compare the performances between DEATH and LOCKJAW??

Not really. Depending on how it's set up, Lockjaw can have no ARE and no delay for line clears, so has the potential to be way faster.

It's not fair to compare Death with Lockjaw 40 Lines because it has so many restrictions. Maybe some of these restrictions can be lifted for a TGM4 to make for a truly hardcore game in every aspect. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
Death is 20G which limits piece placement. TAP ARS also doesn't embrace speed as easily as say Ti-ARS in 20G. Lockjaw 40 Lines is often played in freefall, which allows any kind of movement. Combined with SRS, it's extremely fast and easy to hard drop with very few keypresses.
In Death, there is ARE because ARS requires it for 20G. In 40 Lines, you don't need ARE if you're playing 0G with SRS.
There's a line clear delay in Death from level 0-100 and at 300+. There can be none in Lockjaw.
The sideways movement and delay in TAP is VERY slow when compared to what you can do with Lockjaw.
The Hold piece is also available in Lockjaw but it's not used by everyone.

Yeah, at a certain point, you just can't feel the limit anymore and it's up to you to determine how fast you play. The same thing applies to DOOM in Heboris for me.

as far as death/40 line--they are completely different games. it's like the single player in an fps and the multiplayer in an fps. they both compliment each other, but highlight different skills and ideas. it is a completely different mood that gets me playing 40 line than it is that gets me playing TGM.

Just a question, but how does everyone manage to play with 1G DAS? I misdrop fairly frequently with only 1/3G DAS and waste time clearing up the garbage with singles and doubles, but with 1G DAS I misdrop insanely to the point of it being unplayable.
Ordinarily, fast DAS is intended to get a piece to the wall as fast as possible, and the player can backtrack the piece after that.
There are special ways to "finesse" blocks (caffeine's term) under SRS with fast DAS. See this diagram (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=DAS#One_space_from_the_wall) for your first clue. To learn more, see [[Finesse (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index.php?title=0G_60_Hz_SRS_Movement_Finesse)]].

i had that happen to me a couple times so i had to change the number. i don't get the active time stat anyway. i understand how it works, but it always seems to be 5-6 seconds shorter than your actual time. never see it 20s less.

jujube, for that, click "disable smilies in this post."
about fast das, you're not supposed to hold left or right and then wait for it to reach the column while you quickly drop it. you'll misdrop for sure. it's far more accurate and quick to tap tap tap where you need to go, except for the wall and sometimes close to the wall (for which you can refer to the finesse article).
and what's so wrong with that term anyway?definition: [n] subtly skillful handling of a situationif there's a better term, then fine by me, but that seems to fit well enough.

i don't get the active time stat anyway. i understand how it works, but it always seems to be 5-6 seconds shorter than your actual time. never see it 20s less.
Because LJ has small delays when you drop a piece and clear lines, and they just happen to add up to 5-6 every time.

ah ok thanks 8)
kotetsu-yeah i guess the active time stat would be more useful if you were playing with line clear delay. of course no one wants that in 40 lines which is all i'm looking at.

what's so wrong with that term anyway?
Nothing I guess, although the term ?????(en: control/input optimization) was around since 1998. Same goes for ????(en: spin moves/fitting-in, circa 1988) and twists and so on. I guess Japanese terms tend to get more literal and precise while terms here tend more to appropriate general terms in figurative manners. OTOH again, some Japanese-originated terms like ?????(en: Zangi-moves) and ????(en: Torikan) do sound a bit more playful.

I believe 2.6 tm/s is way too high for Death. 1.9 - 2.0 tm/s is the usual average for 500 without manual locking. With locking, I'm sure you can get to around 2.3 - 2.4 tm/s, as seen in sqr's video.
But anyhow, I agree with rosti that 20G ARS is a completely different game of tetris. If you don't know how the rotations work, not even a long lock time will save you.

And SRS is different than DRS, and step reset is different than entry reset, and keyboards are different than arcade sticks, and fast DAS is different than slow DAS, etc. But, are we still playing Tetris? How much of a "completely different game of Tetris" could it be? Sure you will need to learn the different wall kicks and gauge your riskiness and your conservativeness, tweak your strategy to fit the ends and outs of successful play, and that can take a long time to learn, but just how meaningful are the differences? I'm not saying any certain way of playing is more significant than another way of playing. I'm just asking "what is the real test of a Tetris player?" To tell you the truth, I have no clue. I couldn't tell you the most meaningful type of Tetris to play. Could it be speed, endurance, tolerating your opponent's garbage while outsmarting him in the end? What defines a strong player? This is becoming a little too philosophical, but I think they're good, hard questions. If only because we obsessives devote so much of our time and energy to this game.
Anyway, aside from all that. I'm not the smartest person alive, but can I point out processing speed? How fast a person can identify a tetromino, evaluate the play field, translate, rotate, and drop is measure common to all games. Restricted by some games, yes, but I think processing speed is a more intrinsic skill than most, and travels well from game to game.

I don't think anyone was saying that the skills don't in large part carry over. "Completely different game" should be read as "hugely different strategy."

Actually, DOOM in Heboris is much faster than Death in TAP so you're really fast in terms of speed. But a few key differences have to be taken into consideration.
1. Default DOOM = 3 previews. Death = 1 preview.
2. Default DOOM has a Hold feature. Death has no hold feature.
3. SRS with move reset is much more forgiving than TAP ARS with step reset.
With these differences in mind, I think Death is exponentially harder than SRS DOOM.
all that being said, playing that fast is totally amazing. SRS or ARS that speed is amazing. very difficult. way above me.

Look at all the modes in The New Tetris and The Next Tetris, which got incorporated into Tetris Worlds as Square and Sticky respectively. Look at all the modes in Tetris DS, especially the Klustar-inspired Catch and the Klotski-inspired Touch. Implementations of Bombliss and even Puzzle League have been published under a Tetris license in the United States.
"What is Tetris?" Anything that Mr. Rogers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henk_Rogers) and the people in his neighborhood like. Compare the UNIX system, which is well defined by a published UNIX Guideline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_UNIX_Specification) and a published branding program (http://www.unix.org/what_is_unix/the_brand.html).

Well, there are games with the trademark, and then there are games with roughly x by 1/2x playfield with one-sided tetrominoes that can translate/rotate/drop and when configured into a row they clear. The differences I gave were rotation system, lock down behavior, input method, DAS, etc.

Jono's a mile ahead of the rest of us in terms of speed though.
Thank you,
I am also going to be working on a new 180 seconds run, soon.
But I have been chronically ill with glandular fever for the past month, and it has slowed me down a some what.

In the other game, time travel is not hard (http://acsafety.ytmnd.com/default.htm). If you turn off sync to the NTP pool, it's not hard on Windows either, which was useful for running time-limited beta software past its expiration date back when DRM was young.

geez, making it look easy. that's a big jump from your previous best, especially considering how fast the time is already. aren't you supposed to make smaller time improvements as your time gets smaller?

I'd say take a screenshot, just shrink the picture a bit. It's better proof than pasting the text.
Then again, I wouldn't expect anyone here to try and cheat anyway.

this probably doesn't count but I got 1:03 in 40 line on my DS. Since school started I haven't had time to play so I usually just squeeze in games on my DS in between classes. Last week was my first time in awhile I was able to sit down to play some tetris but the pcb in my stick broken so I've been busying trying to wire up a new psx pcb. Again I'm not looking for any official recognition or whatever I'm just happy that I shaved off 5 seconds from my old time so I thought I'd share with my fellow tetris players http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I play with the default DS settings. SRS and exponential speed. the version is 0.37, but it's alright if it's not added. I almost have my stick fixed and I hope to get under a minute on my pc soon http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

no I don't. Honestly record keeping isn't that big of a deal. If I wasn't so busy with class and my arcade stick wasn't broken my personal speed record wouldn't have been made on a DS. However if you are looking to add stuff I'd appreciate rotation sound effects as well as the 5 line warning. If not that's ok too, I'll take lockjaw anyway I can get it!

great game for just one week's worth of play, and cool skin you've made.
i always find it really interesting to watch brand new players play. it's usually very fresh and different from what i've habitualized. anyway, if i had to suggest one thing, from the looks of how you backtrack and change your mind a lot (something common of newer players), it would be a good exercise to play a game where you have to stop at each piece, think about where exactly you want it, work out what's the most efficient method of getting it to that place, and then executing that method perfectly.
keep up the good work, and keep the vids coming.

Kiruat, it might help with the conversion from TGM if you set the next pieces to appear at the top, rather than the side. You get fewer previews, but I found it a little less disorientating, and my mind was better suited to looking at the next piece.

I am not even sure what that is.
Basically, when you place a tetromino, it takes gaps into account from the bottom of the well up, rather than the other way around. Tepples explained it better in a recent post in this thread (http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100&start=750):
Ordinarily, the logic used for gravity (incl. soft and hard drop) and shadow moves the shadow down until it overlaps something, then moves it back up a row:
for y in piece.y down to floor:
if overlap(piece.x, y):
set hardDropY to y + 1 and stop
With bottom blocks, it starts at the floor, moves up, and accepts the first position that doesn't overlap something:
for y in floor up to piece.y:
if overlap(piece.x, y):
set hardDropY to y and stop
This was intended to match the behavior of hard drop in multiblocks (http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=12793#12793).
Cute lil' animation I whipped up demonstrating this behavior:

78tpm-- that puts you at about average. try harder!
i wonder what "average" really comes out to for people who like playing tetris... i'd bet about 1 piece per second. 2 per second seems to be the fanatic mark. no?
caffeine
11-20-2007, 09:48 AM
it'd be different for different games/scenes. but what i remember from tnet, 30-60 for noobs. 70-80 was average. 90-120 was good. 130-150 was great (i remember a bunch a people who leveled off at 120, then another group who leveled off at 140). and then there were a few crazy people at 160, and a loner at 180ish in his prime.
i'd say for nowadays tetris: <1 tps for new. 1 tps for casual. 1.5 for experienced. 2 for someone who pushes themself. 2.5 for someone who is experienced and pushes themself (that's the hard part). and then >3 for players with all that and exceptional concentration/routine.

There is no way Tetris nubs can get 1tps. Not even close. 0.5 would be a far more accurate figure.
I'd say 60tpm is a figure for people who are reasonably competent at it.
caffeine
11-20-2007, 11:15 PM
that's why i said <1. tps isn't even reasonable competent. i'm fairly sure any guy who hasn't played before can reach 1 tps after about 10 hours of playing.

in nes tetris, you must soft drop, right? that takes about two seconds from top to bottom, doesn't it?
tepples
11-21-2007, 03:01 AM
NES soft dropping is 0.5G, as are sections 19 through 28. But this TAS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Szb6X5WqI) seems to go significantly faster than 1 tps because the player builds a platform (a la push) to build toward the top.
I also used to play Microsoft Tetris, which had hard drop, but I couldn't go 1 tps in that either.
On newer games, even with hard drop, I didn't immediately shoot to 1 tps the moment I bought Tetris DS. I had a hard time beating CPU 4 the first day.

eh, TDS was my first tetris game, and I very quickly reached 1tps... but maybe not within 10 hours, it was probably a few days.
I don't think most people are able to reach 1tps very quickly. Out of all my friends that I've played (who would be 'average') none of them can sustain 1tps on TDS, but that's probably because they're used to soft-dropping everything.

Tetrinet 2 may get a big wave of new german player. The german broadcaster "Giga" revived their old concept of the "Giga Liga". "Liga" means league. It started 2 weeks ago and there are around 10 people playing tetrinet a few hours a day and at least 30-50 people dropping by ocassionally. Well their overall skill is not very high. In fact Iam one of the 5 best players on there http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif but i have seen a few player which started playing tetris with the start of the league and they already show quite a talent for this game http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif

hmm, wouldn't you have to place dominoes at 2 times your normal speed and triminoes at 1.3 times just to keep up? a slower player may benefit from placing simpler pieces, but the strongest players who are trying to overcome physical limitations more than mental would most likely play slower.
in any case, i agree that the 10-piece bag shouldn't be allowed. it makes it a different game.

If anyone else agrees, I'll consider banning it, although I don't really think it's a threat at all to the current game. Sure it's different, but it doesn't unbalance the current game at all. If you can get an uber record with this randomizer, you can probably get an even better record with another randomizer.
Ok time i guess after 30 min playing.

No offence Tepples, there was no need for me to update after a demo/record feature was added.
It's laziness really, as I basically can't be bothered updating every time there's a new version.
For me its not so much laziness as it is pointless, its like getting new parts for a perfectly good/running machine, why fix/change what is already working fine?

Hehe, I don't suppose that y'all are still running an old MS-DOS/W311 machine (http://tang.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/Weeds_486DX4-100.htm), are ya <LOL>? Sorry, couldn't resist, simply making a point <G> http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Well, currently my graphics card is around 7 or 8 years old (NVidia Inno Riva TNT2 Model 64 if anyone cares).
My hard-drive is 40GB in size.
If it wasn't for things breaking and needing to be replaced, I'd still be running Windows 98SE on 128MB RAM. As it stands my computer got an overhaul about a year ago when the motherboard and processor went haywire and most things got replaced by the tech guys (including the OS) so I now run XP with 512MB RAM.
In short "if it ain't broke, don't fix it (or pay money for an upgrade)" is very much the motto used for my PC. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Well I guess using an old DOS machine is breaching the terms "prefectly good" and "working fine".

Anyone knows me knows that I agree *1000%* with all of the above - all of my machines are old clunkers, but they work superbly and do what I need 'em to do - plus, I'm a real stickler/nut for older PC stuff.
BUT... although I don't agree with camping out in front of CompUSA awaiting the newest Mickey$oft release (like many nutz have done in years past), I DO agree with upgrading certain software depending on circumstance - Windows/other M$ OS? Hell no! Upgrade patch for a game, or other free upgrade for some other application software (that adds new features, or fixes previous bugs)? Most definately http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif --- which is why to me <IMHO> upgrading hardware and upgrading something like LockJaw is "apples 'n' oranges", so to speak.
(refering to Caffene's post about StarCraft) A prime example... every SC upgrade patch was not only free, but (usually <G>) fixed bugs in the game, as well as adding totally new features. Blizzard is very high on my software developer/company list due to there excellent support for SC throughout all these years (almost a decade now?). My only gripe was/is those massive patch files that chug my dialup down to a screaming death <G>.

Hehe, from the afore-mentioned web page "and still operational"... sounds perfectly good and working fine to me <LOL>! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

What on earth is slowing you down?? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif As a death M player you should be able to get below 1 minute even on a bad try.
EDIT: ZOMG fix your randomizer!!

While you're fixing the randomizer, make sure to turn off deep drop.
General guideline for for DAS:
Either 1G or instant.
Unless you're technically a senior citizen, you should be able to handle less than 166 comfortably. I'm not saying go down too far, though. Worse thing a new player could do is make useless misdrops because of excessively low DAS, but you know, I just think 166 is a little high.
Your high keys/tetrominoes indicates indecisiveness. Keep at it.

Trust me it is very hard when you have not yet the habit !
And I have the feeling my keys are not well set..
When I see the replays of jono, it seems he has 2 drops :
-one locks directely.
-the other drop without locking.
Is it an impression ?

Yes, you can set it so that you have both hard drop and firm drop. Also, make sure you address the things caffeine mentioned as it really affects your speed.

Trust me it is very hard when you have not yet the habit !
Start by making the environment more familiar. Set speed curve to Death, maximum entry delay to 250 ms, and rotation to Arika. A Death master should be able to easily get under a minute under these conditions, as 40 lines is just barely longer than one section.
And I have the feeling my keys are not well set..
When I see the replays of jono, it seems he has 2 drops :

That's "alternate firm drop" in game keys.
