Finally! :D
I like the rules. No T-spins and adjustable DAS! <3
So we're using BlockBox. Time to start practicing seriously then. Not that I really expect to survive the first round. But at the very least I want to prevent a 15-0 humiliation. ^^

Sounds great.
But I would prefer if we started when blockbox has 8-way input. Which I am hopping is not far off.

Don't worry jono, you will pass the 1st turn..Don't worry.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
I already made the groups, this is a real nightmare for some players, and a cool and quiet turn for other..
But I followed the method initialy set 3 months ago, I will publish it in detail..No need to check if I cheated or not, seeing my group, I think every body will trust me..
I just wait for 3 last little things now :
- the 8 way input
- the garbage method
- a little simulation between me and deniax to check if everything work correctely..

Whatever happens about the last detail : garbages, 8 way, etc...Which are not really important, the contest will start next Monday !!!!
Actually, as soon as I will return to my job and get internet to edit and publish the groups composition..
No problem for me if I can't play with internet properly, with my joystick, I have less than 0,00000000000001% of chance to pass the first turn..
So be ready !!!!!!!!!! and please, try to discuss to find an arrangement about the garbages..

8-way movements are not important??? Now I know the Tetris-wolrd has officially gone crazy http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif .
Premature arthritis is very important for me (to avoid that is).

Please note I was only half serious half joking.

Ok ok..We won't start before the 8 way input works properly...Sorry Deniax, you will have some additional job..I will feel bad if I beat jono because he suffer from that..
For the garbage, I personnaly don't care, try to arrange and negociate it with your opponent...
For example, if c_t fight with Rosti, they can play alternaly between TGM and random garbages..
Normaly we arrive at the date I had fixed for the end of this round, but only 9 of the 24 matches has been done..
So I will let it run for the holidays of the end year.

should just have the same type of garbage for every round of the tournament, what would happen if 2 players don't agree?

Sorry Deniax, you will have some additional job..I will feel bad if I beat jono because he suffer from that..Any specific things I need to know about 8 way input? When I press down+left at the same time, the next frame the piece moves 1 cell to the left and one cell to the bottom?
jujube
10-19-2008, 05:59 AM
deniax: 8-way simply allows for a piece to be dropped or locked while left or right is being held. this is so the next piece can start moving the same direction as soon as it spawns, which is good if you want to place two or more pieces on the same side of the well. there shouldn't necessarily be an initial shift for the next piece. as far as initial shift goes, it should be controlled by whatever initial behavior you're intending, as something independent from 8-way on/off.
with 8-way on, the rate at which a piece shifts or drops should just depend on the DAS and gravity settings.

true 8-way would let you soft drop diagonally.
I think the input logic should work like this for movement keys.
key 1 is pressed.
key 2 pressed while key 1 is down. key 1's input is cancelled, and key2's input is used.
key 2 is released. key 2 input is considered off, and key 1 input is considered on.
key 2 is pressed again. same thing happens.
key 3 is pressed, with key1 and key 2 still down. key 1 is considered permanantly released from this point. key 3 is obeyed. if it is released with key2 own, key 2 will be obeyed again.
which movement key is used is irrelevant.
Other possibilities.
L/R have priority over u/d. (tgM1 does this in inC)
U/D have priority over L/R (this seems to be what the previous poster was describing)
first key pressed has priority
I described "last key pressed has priority"

Hmm, so there are more ways possible to interpret 8-way input..
I really don't know much about 8 way input , so you guys need to decide how 8-way should work, I will just make it http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
Please bare in mind that while it's quite easy to implement (1-2 days) it needs to be tested before the first contest starts because it could not work right, or worse, it could break the 4-way input.

key 2 is released. key 2 input is considered off, and key 1 input is considered on.
A rule like that might cause misdrops: Turn on SRS handling of the up key (called "hard drop" or "sonic lock"). Press your 8-way joystick or directional pad up. Now key1 is up, and the filtered input is "up". A piece drops and locks into place. Roll to up+right. Now key1 is up and key2 is right, and the filtered input is "right". Roll to up again. Now key1 is up, and the filtered input is "up". Another hard drop.I had this problem in Lockjaw 0.11 through 0.12 and changed it to give the first key priority in 0.13.

Which is exactly what should happen. Why would you roll the stick to the up position if you don't intend to hard drop?

ideally, if key 2 isn't released until after the spawning of the next piece, key 1 should work when the new piece spawns. if you press left and down (lock), the current piece should lock, and the next piece should immediately start moving left when it spawns, before down is released. in other words, as long as you're pressing left, pieces are always trying to go left, regardless of whatever other keys you're pressing. there should be protection against double locking or double hard dropping which requires that down be released and pressed again to lock the next piece. but if i understand TAP/TGM3 behavior correctly, firm drop should act immediately on the spawning piece. IMO if (firm drop)+left are continually pressed with 8-way on, a piece should spawn at 20G in the center, then move left, lock delay expires, the next piece spawns at 20G center, etc.
Other possibilities.
L/R have priority over u/d. (tgM1 does this in inC)
that option sounds like it wouldn't allow locking or dropping while left/right is held. a little too close to standard 4-way.
Press your 8-way joystick or directional pad up.
hopefully Blockbox will allow for 8-way to be turned off for the benefit of joystick and gamepad users, unless you feel it's advantageous to have it on. deniax made firm drop available for each rotation system, which doesn't allow diagonal l+d or r+d movement anyway (diagonal movement that joystick/gamepad users may want when soft drop is present).
edit: if left and right are both held, then i think the last key pressed should take effect, and if released then the other key acts. if both are pressed in the same frame...i don't know, you should hear an annoying beep.

I rolled it up to hard drop one piece. The roll to up+right and back was noise, and the point of diagonal filtering is to deduce the most likely intended gesture from the noisy input. Perhaps your algorithm would work with a relatively long ARE, but with the <=3-frame ARE in flagship Guideline games such as Tetris Worlds and Tetris DS, you would end up with a lot of double hard drops.

An annoying beep from the game, or from the keyboard controller? I don't hear the latter when I play StepMania and do a left+right jump.

from the game i suppose http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif the keyboard/keyboard controller should be able to handle any 2 simultaneous inputs.
better yet, nothing should happen, which is already the case in Blockbox (which may be due to 8-way input not working).

For joystick, you want the first input to get priority.
but for keyboard, the last input gettig priority is better overall, i think.

Agreed here. When you roll your fingers about the keys, you have to worry about whether or not your fingers are coming off the keys in time for all of them to register properly. When I roll around Up->Left->Down, I want the piece to firm drop, shift, and lock on each key press; I don't want to continue shifting left once my finger has landed on the Down key.

no, for each groups there is 2 winners..
The randomizing method has been proposed by caffeine, and that seems the only one way to randomly place the players in their groups..Except that everybody prepare and organize themself for registering in a several order, there is no way to know your opponents before the last guy registers..

I've said this in IRC but I'll just say it again on here. It would not shock me in the least if blink won the final with a 30-0. What WOULD shock me is if the match came out to 30-1+.
No offense to anyone who faces blink. You may be good but he is god (yeah, not a typo there). But with that said, props to anyone who does manage to snatch a game from blink.
So that is reason you want give up..
Ridiculous..Do you think that everybody will give up the contest 3 because you will destroy us at SHIRASE 300 ??

I think that's a bit of a silly comparison. The only similarity to TNET proper is the fact that it's got the random garbage. Which is optional.

Alright...I played my match against Ai, but the game froze at 13-5. Blockbox-D3D refuses to load now, and just refreshes the page every time it tries to load the game. Bug? Maybe. Either way, I do intend to finish the match, so Ai and I will find another time to finish when the D3D blockbox works again.
Won the first 2 games and started misdropping all over the place for some reason (probably got overexcited). But still he's the faster player and better at clearing garbage.
This means I'm as good as out of the tournament barring a miracle turnaround. Anyway I'm looking forward to finish the game and get a little closer. ^^

It was pretty exiting, especially at the start it was very close.
I was playing decently until 5-5 after which Baxter started playing better.
I'm officially out of the tournament. Finishing the game against KevinDDR is merely a formality now. It was a nice experience. I pushed myself the last few weeks for the tournament and improved my speed a little. I feel a better player. But still a long way to go.
Good luck for those still in the tournament. I'm looking forward to the next event. ^^

I certainly won't never call somebody "God" who is unable to manage a Tetris game with the ARS system..
If we could quantify and add the SRS and ARS Skill, you as me digital would be far over blink..
Kan ? Yes, maybe him, he is a god..Because he can complete a TI Gm rank in both ARS and SRS, with hold, no hold..

I think you're totally misunderstanding me in this regard by taking my words too literally. The point I'm trying to make is that blink is a world class multiplayer SRS player. He is strong enough to compete and even defeat the most prolific SRS top player in Japan (who has been undefeated in a match afaik). Hell, even before SRS was properly conceptualized and defined, blink was a monster at multiplayer on TNet. I'm sure there are people here who can give testimony to that.
I'm not talking about being well-rounded here in the least. If I were, Jin8 would certainly be at the top of the heap no doubt about that. Even though he's not the best in every area, he's certainly freaking strong in all of them.

No, you're just missing the whole point.
Blink will win this contest. It was decided before it even began.
Whether or not he's good in death/shirase/etc doesn't apply to this contest, because this tests a particular set of skills, a set which Blink dominates in.
That doesn't say anything about the other contests (though at this point I forgot what they were.)

because this tests a particular set of skills, a set which Blink dominates in.
Blink is definitely powerful, probably the best 0G random garbage VS player on TC, but to stop fellating him for a moment this contest in particular would benefit from DAS finesse which I believe is not a strong point of his.

His point was that Blink's not invincible. And mine was that caffeine and jono have clocked in waaaaay more hours with fast DAS, so don't write them off. It's ok having favourites and whatnot, but player worship kind of creeps me out.
Considering this game has 8 frame DAS (Shirase section 1) for multiplayer games, DAS finesse can be crucial in deciding who wins. It could be a tight call between the strong players like caffeine, jono, Digital and Blink. Also, don't forget that T-spins have no bonus, so a lot of the guideline versus strategy doesn't apply.

Digi thanks for defending me haha, trust me I respect your gameplay just as much.
But the truth is everybody is beatable including me, and as much as I'd like to fulfill Digital's 30-0 Finals, I must say that I know will lose a good amount of rounds before this tournament is over. That being said, I don't like the samaf example of me losing because we weren't on fair terms when he won, he had everything unlocked while I only had DAS 3 , line clear delay 3, soft drop 3 and piece preview 3. The extra DAS and soft drop really do make a big impact in overall speed. Once I unlocked everything I have beat him 4 straight times and he has yet to beat me. A better example would be Digitals victory over me on Tetris DS, as nobody had an unfair advantage.
As for the tournament, anything can happen so I definitely have nothing in the bag. Caffeine, Jono and Digital are very strong and I'm sure their fast DAS finesse skills will cause me tons of trouble. Any one of them might eliminate me from the tourney, and others that I haven't mentioned and never played before.
P.S. Shoryu drop by #arika so we can play our match.

I do want to note that at this point there is a DAS logic bug in Blockbox. When you DAS to the wall and shift one back, it will often shift two or three back, sometimes in the span of one frame. I've discussed this with Deniax and it appears to be fixed for 40 lines, but not for Versus. I decided to keep playing matt because either way it wouldn't make a tangible difference in the outcome of this round (he crushed me plain and simple), but I do want to point this out to Amnesia.

Thank you everybody,
I need to make a comment about something, no need to restart the contest I think, but it seems that deniax planed to bring a modification on the preview displaying, some of TGM players have may suffered from that..
For my case I decided to wait a bit, I am not egoist and for the others who would complain for that, maybe they could replay their matches if their opponents agree. Digital in person also reported the problem, I am still not sure he would have lost 0 - 10 against blink (in amical battle), if he would have got his own potentiel has he got in sudden ti when he reach 1200.

Hi,
Deniax and I played our games the first or second weekend of the tournament, but I didn't report in because he misunderstood the rules and thought it was best of 15 games and not first to 15 wins.
In other words we either need to resume where we left off and play our last games or start over, it's up to him. ( I think it was 11-4 to me )
Perhaps the best would be to play from the beginning again since it was three weeks or so since we started.

I won't extend myself on the subject, but it seems that jono suffered from some lags..
Maybe the score would have been different, more like 15 - 0 or 15 - 1..
I feel upset about that, I would like to do another game but it would be useless, jono would still win with or without lag..
So let me apologize for the trouble I made about that on blocbox's chat, but trust me, I don't like the idea of having stolen you 5 points thanks to your lags...

I will remove the participation of Shoryu and G - fish very soon..
Say, if I have no news from them wednesday, I fire their name of the list.
These 2 mathces are critical :
-Red Star - matt_hatter
-Burbruee - DHE
I need a match, or an abandon.
I am too nice and sweet I think, I am not cruel enought to skip the first turn and start the second, without giving a last delay.
but I consider that more than 1 month is really enough now.

I can let an extra only if people explain me a reason for an exceptional delay by PM.
Sorry for MY delay at least.

i won my match with Burbruee 15-0. ggs.
he had me in a lot of trouble in many of the games, so just like in my TOJ match with blink, the score doesn't tell the whole story. it seemed like i only had a slight edge in speed, but over the course of a game i think it made the difference. we're really closer in skill than the score suggests though.

No problem, I just got stressed because of the impatience of blink, if it was only depending on me, this round could be over in january or later, that could not be a problem, but still, I was expecting more than only 4 of the 24 matches..In 2 weeks..

Yeah, I contacted my opponents twice, but we haven't been able to work out the matches. The longer a tournament lasts, the more of a headache it becomes, the less likely it will be successful.

Sorry to be bringer of bad news but speaking of cancelling, I may have to. I have just been flat-out working (6 days a week) - mainly due to Christmas being just around the corner.
Usually on my day off I am catching up with friends and family - I am really struggling to find time to organise matches and times to play.
I think at the point dropping out may be easier (on me and other players) rather than delay the competition a further month, as I will be doing 6 days a week until mid January and just cant see myself with enough spare time for the comp.
I apologise to everyone in my group and the competition for delaying matches (particularly Blink, I was looking forward to playing you) or causing any inconvenience .

jono, without you this contest loses a lot of his sens..
Personnaly, I am not really opposed by the fact that you, or anyone else takes his time to play..
This is not the world soccer cup, I put a date to limit this round, but I prefer that it tooks 3 months with every matches, than limit it at 3 weeks with less than the half of the matches done..

But no pressure, I repeat that I am not opposed to very long delays..If that can let some additional hours of training to defeat blink, it is not that bad..
Maybe that is the reason that you are so impatient.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
Technically speaking, it is almost sure if jono learns a bit some basis of versus strategy, he could become the winner of this contest.

Maybe that is the reason that you are so impatient.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
No.......the reason is because this tournament would take half a year or longer to finish at the pace it was going. But if you think I was trying to get things done faster because I'm scared people are going to improve, then by all means delay the tournament all you want. We'll see who still cares about this tournament in another 3 months, honestly I believe less than 5 people even care about it today. In the end, it's your tournament, run it however you like. I don't want you blaming its failure on my impatience. I don't even think I was being as impatient as you made me sound, I waited over a month for the first round before I even said anything to you. If you believe that extending the tournament deadlines will save this tournament, then who cares what I say. I actually hope you delay the tournament longer now, so you can stop bringing me up like it's my fault.
I think it's pretty clear the endless compromises killed it. It's pretty safe to say about half the people lost interested when the game moved from Hebo Mini to Blockbox.

Hey blink calm down ! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
Is my humour so hard to get ??
Ahh..
Anyway, I will continu to let it go..We will see, that won't kill anybody if this contest have to be canceled in the close future..
blink, unless I anounce a special price of 3000$ for the winner and 1000$ for the second, it is impossible to impose short delay in expecting that 90% of the players will be present. Honnestly, I have the feeling that I could not do a lot of thing to arrange the situation, or avoid it.
There is another problem I think, maybe it is only me, but we can easily notice than the score is exponentialy the reflect of a difference between 2 players, which kills a lot the suspense..I mean, say 2 players, with a skill at "x" and the second at "1,1x", the result we give us an enormous gap in the score, like 15-3, which is not the case in a soccer comp for example, where the Danemark could defeat the brazil, with much more probability than a Rosti who could beat a blink.
think it's pretty clear the endless compromises killed it. It's pretty safe to say about half the people lost interested when the game moved from Hebo Mini to Blockbox.
I have a reply for that, I let a long period to allow informatician expert people to find a solution about the garbage problem..Many people told me that they was about to solve the bug, but nothing has been done..If I had waited, blink or somebody else would have made the same reproach about the delay between the registering and the starting of the 1st round.

yeah, that seems to be the general mood. and i agree that extending the tournament won't really make people want to play more. people will just keep dropping out or losing interest. oh well, not much we can do. people want to do their own thing. i doubt that anyone is delaying their match to get more practice. they're just playing single player modes in blockbox or playing different games. i don't want people to feel obligated to play me if they don't want to, so i don't really care one way or the other if my matches get played, but i'll be around at IRC and i'm available most weeknights and at random times on weekends.

I have really lost interest in it. I will play any opponent who wants to play. I haven't been on much though due to the time of year. All the finals and final papers and projects are all done these last couple weeks of the semester. As much as I enjoy tetris I can only take out a little time during the day recently to play tetris and that usually is at like 4:00 am EST. I apologize to my opponents for not being active but my schoolwork needs to come before any sort of gaming. I'll try to play my matches this coming week when I get off of school.
Edit:I just read my message. I meant to start off as "I haven't really lost interest in it." When typing I often forget to add that last part to make it a negative. My bad. What I meant to say is that it isn't lack of interest, it is because this time of year is very busy for school work until I get my winter break. I apologize for the confusion .

I don't think it is because you have really messed up anything Amnesia. I fixed my previous post by the way, I didn't realize that I screwed up a word that changed the entire tone of my post.
I have a link from the Cultris forum to show you. http://cultris.ath.cx/forum/topic.asp?$sid=&id=217
This tournament started Nov 1st. They are still in the second round of the tournament and only half the matches in it have been done. Not to mention the second round is smaller in the Cultris tournament than this tournament.
From my experience with online tournaments is that they take awhile to finish. That length of time really helps to put a damper on any tournament. It starts off strong but then kind of gets a sluggish feeling when so many rounds take awhile. I still would like to see this tournament end, and I think it there can be some interesting battles ahead.
Another problem with the online tournaments is the varying timezones. Due to my awkward hours I am usually awake between 3pm-5am EST on non class days, 10am to 3 am on class days. So, I might be able to catch Jono, but it can be hard for others. I presume Jono has a tough time with his timezone being so different the a lot of the other players.
Online tournaments are just difficult regardless of what you do, at least from my experience. I think there is still support for this tournament, some people are just busy at the moment.

So what if this tournament takes a while? It's not like it's going to take up any more of my free time if it finishes in March rather than next week. I'd rather see it finished and take a while rather than just get abandoned, because I don't really see what the issue is with longevity.

I repeat it, taking some risk for making you upset again blink, but I have to admit that you made me feel pressured and a lot scared because I really thought that everybody has lost interest like blink. If I was the favorite player like you, I think I would have the same sentiment of impatience.
But I tell you, I don't want you to take that as an offence, it is thank to you that I got pressured, and pushed a bit more things to progress.

"So what if this tournament takes a while?"
A one month commitment is a totally different thing than a "indefinite... could last forever" commitment. I want to know that this thing will actually be completed before I put in the work required to contact and arrange a match time that's good for both my opponent and myself (something I need to do three times a round?).
I for one don't like responsibilities hanging in the back of my mind for an unknown amount of time.
