So now that there's a few players here that play this, I thought it would be time for a leaderboard.

Ranking goes by grade, then line, then time, then level. For the qualified ranking, a record with level/time information tie-breaks a record lacking that information.
Okay, I'll start off with my S4 and Jago's m2 (he's probably done better since, but this is his Ti ranking as he sent it to me a couple months ago). I would post my qualified grade 2 as well, but I didn't get a shot of the game level, time, etc, so I only know it's grade 2.

Level and clear time etc don't make a lot of sense for the qualified table. At any rate, my best is m3, though I've since been demoted to m2.

muf, I am S8 qualified.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
And c_t is m4..
Now you wonder, why would you post a record of the same grade with a slightly higher level and a much slower time? Well, my dear friends, I missed a lot of cools here, yet I still got S4. This means, that even though I was playing slower (with loud music and bad concentration), I was stacking better and getting more combos and tetrises. I feel that S5 is coming closer!

if you can nail all the section cools and survive less-than-half to all of section 500 depending on how well you've been stacking, then s5 is pretty much guaranteed. so keep on truckin' muffin

That's what I was thinking as well. I just need to throw down a serious run with the same kind of stacking and I should have S5 http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
And more proof that my stacking has improved:

three m7+ games in a day? that is some staggering consistency. get a Master grade and you'll be my hero

I think I had 2 slower m7 ranks that got bumped off the daily list, and I'm pretty sure I passed the m5 and m6 qualification tests with m7+ as well. Besides that I had maybe 1 or 2 m6 ranks, and then that's pretty much all I played that day. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif After exclusively playing Shirase for the last while, I feel quite strong coming back to Master. Finally the maximum speed doesn't apply much pressure to me anymore, and I'm finding I can always reach 999 (barring the rare catastrophic misdrop).
I don't think I've fully brought my Master records up to date with my Shirase record, so I'll definitely be trying for a Master rank in the near future. I just have to perform decently in the main game and credits together.

Qualified in a single attempt! I've been consistently getting S3 games all evening. I was hoping I could get an S3 exam on the same day but I got tired and drove into misdrop city, and turned off the machine for the day.
EDIT: When I said "turned off the machine for the day", obviously, I meant until midnight, because now it's officially the next day, right? Right? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

Who said I wasn't going to? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif
Finally my Ti machine acknowledged my superior play and after a couple of S4 games it gave me the S3 exam.
The shaky photo pretty much captures my excitement; I made an epic misdrop at the end of section 5, and only barely passed the section border before topping out. At this point, I was completely sure that I failed the exam, and was caught entirely off guard when the roulette stopped at "??"! I scrambled to take a photo but I could only manage to take a picture of the endgame stats as they were just appearing.

Hi guys,
Iīm new here. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif
Iīm mainly into vs-fighters, but I decided that I needed something different which I can also play alone. As I stumbled across a few videos of the TGM series a few weeks ago, I wanted to give Tetris a shot. Have not played one since the classic GameBoy one. I was fascinated by the flexibility of the rotation system, and also the hold piece and the three piece preview of TI. Of course, TI is too expensive to just try it out, so I bought Sega Tetris for the Naomi first which I liked, but it was a bit too old school for my taste. So I decided to to drop many bucks on TI, but I donīt regret it. Received it friday last week.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/5449/tetrisvw2.jpg
I have earned my fair share of regrets until now. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Got quickly promoted to Rank 4, but that was all until now. Receive Rank 3 every now and then, and just Rank 2 a few minutes ago.
I also have a few questions: which medals do exist (I know of Section Time), and what do the coloured lines mean in the highscore table? Also, what is the difference between provisional and qualified? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif
Is qualified only the games in which you play for a promotion?
mushroom
10-15-2008, 06:09 PM
Firstly, congrats on getting Ti!
Medals are ST, SK, AC, CO for section time, number of tetrises, number of bravos and highest combo.
No line means no clear. Green line means 999 was reached and orange line means 999 was reached and the credit roll was cleared.
Provisional means a non-promotional exam grade. Qualification means a promotional exam grade.

I also have a few questions: which medals do exist (I know of Section Time)
The wiki should have this info. In one TGM game, there's a medal just for rotating; you can increase your chance of getting this just by IRSing all your O pieces (for which rotation has no effect outside block-colored games such as Bombliss and Tetris DS vs. with items).
Also, what is the difference between provisional and qualified? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif
Is qualified only the games in which you play for a promotion?
As I understand it, yes. But then I just read the forum and the wiki; I don't leave near a Ti machine.

Unless you only use two rotation buttons in which case you can just shift your fingers.
Or even better, if your brain somehow is wired so that the inputs are naturally reversed.
I'm sort of a hybrid of both using only two rotations but my brain naturally reverses the rotations. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Didnīt have much time to play in the last few weeks, but improved a little anyway:
Master: 5:16:25, Level 530, Class 1, ST Gold, SK Bronze
Donīt have my camera atm, hope it gets accepted anyway.
I break the Torikan very regularly now, the speed overwhelms me, but I play now more solid at any speed, I think I can reach S1 soon.
BTW, of course the speeds of Classic and World are not directly comparable, but in which one are the more faster times possible? Usually I see better records in Classic, but that could be because of the fact that more people play Classic. Iīm too used to World atm, so Classic somehow feels big and chunky, especially the different lock behaviour is confusing.
As a little bonus, I noted the records of my Ti before I deleted them, perhaps they are of interest for you.
THEY ARE NOT MY RECORDS!

this is a good point, and something that isn't mentioned very often when comparing the potential speeds of world and classic. i don't at all want to get into which system i think is faster, but it's true that Japanese players have been playing with sega rotation for up to 20 years, while SRS/world rotation is much newer, and surely the strong TGM players have spent less time playing it.

The no-bs answer to this question to this question is that World lets you play much slower if you want to, but both systems can go blazing fast when you're good with them. As for the absolute theoretical fastest, it's really impossible to make that call but I think most players feel Classic has a slight 20G edge and World has a slight 0G edge.
Oh and thanks for sharing those records. Shirase actually has dead simple grading... That 1300 has got to be S13.

11-18-2008, 01:28 AM
I reached S1 today, but with an absolutely horrible time (about 10 minutes), so I wonīt post it yet. My goal was to survive as long as possible, so I made nearly only one liners as soon as it got really fast, I make many avoidable mistakes at the real high speeds.

Personally I, the Tetris n00b that I am, can actually say that Classic and World feel very different, but I canīt describe why. In the wiki is a table for the delay times, would they be different for World? Of course I know that the pieces spawn in a different rotation, and that the lock behaviour is different, pieces should/must be locked manually after a fast drop in Classic, which isnīt necessary in World (or it doesnīt make such a big difference, Iīm not sure).
colour_thief
11-18-2008, 01:51 AM
The delays are the same for both systems. But the rest of your observations are accurate. Pretty much everthing that can be different is different between the 2 systems:
The initial orientations are different.
The basic rotations are different.
The wallkicks are really really different.
The lock delay reset mechanism is different.
The fast drop/slow drop behaviours are different.
Not to mention cosmetic details like the piece colours and textures...
For now I wouldn't worry about it. Stick with what you're comfortable with (World) and maybe move to Classic when you feel like something a little more hardcore.

Yep, with World, that is the case. On this forum, hard drop is considered the "fast" drop that locks. Firm drop (the one in Classic) is the "fast" drop that doesn't lock.

I play Shirase occasionally, but as I refuse to play World rule (I've only played World Easy mode by accident and World Easy mode one-handed because I'm not good enough to play Classic one-handed), playing it deducts too much decorations from my account, so I either play it logged out or on a separate account that I made specifically to play Shirase. My record so far (not many tries) is 124, which is S1. It's not the lock delay that kills me, but the short ARE that doesn't give me much time to think in between pieces.

It finally came when I least expected it. I played the sloppiest, most single filled beginning that I have in months, not even getting ST bronze until level 400. Seriously, I think the first 2 sections took me 1:10 each, which is so bad as to fail TAP's M requirements by a wide margin. Though my poor first 4 sections were good enough to only miss 1 cool, and then I had a very strong performance after that and a decent fading roll. It's really weird watching myself make terrible mistakes in the beginning and then being completely at ease with the high speed.
Looking forward to getting it again in 6 minutes like I know I can. Or maybe even a MasterK if it all comes together.

If you don't get any section cool!!s, then the music changes:
level 500 (20g) "Fall asleep music"
level 800 "shirase music"
So basically the best thing you can get is with section cool!!s:
level 300 (20g) "Fall asleep music"

It was KAN, and he's spot on when it comes to quality games. Like getting level 1300 in Shirase 3 times in a row at a competition beating jin8 and ZEB. Probably the only one in the whole world who is strong enough to do that.
The main problem by giving out TGM videos is that YouTube limits each video to 10 minutes. One game might last more than 10 minutes if played badly (at least my games).

Great, thanks! I really like the way you are able to clean up your mistakes, thatīs something I really have to work on.
The most annoying thing about fixing up mistakes though is the time it takes to fix something. In this case the time penalty wasn't too much and I was still able to get the cools I needed, but often a single misdrop in 0-99 means missing the cool and not getting a speed boost in the next section. Very frustrating!

Aside from the best practice of just not making the mistakes in the first place, something that can be quite useful (and which I don't do nearly enough) is to be able to simply ignore the mistakes and stack over them. When you start getting several lines under your main body then you should consider clearing the mistakes, but if you've got one or two holes in the stack it's almost always more beneficial in Master modes to simply just stack over them and ignore them. Wasting an entire section digging them out by clearing doubles and singles is far more damaging to your overall score and time.

Yeah, it'd probably look like someone harvesting fruit or catching fish in Animal Crossing. Just as it isn't wise to record and publish every second from 0 to finally paying off your character's house, it isn't wise to record and publish 0 to GM in a Tetris game.

Iīve played a fair bit of games logged out, mainly when I wasnīt yet consistent enough to maintain my decorations. I looked at the global game counter a while ago, and I think it said something like 800 plays total (including those of jagorochi and guests Iīve had over playing the game). By now, almost all my games are logged in, except when Iīm really not even trying to play well. That said, I donīt actually binge all that much on the machine. I agree with muf here. With 3 previews AND hold, you should not have to resort to such a technique. The only time I use it is when I accidentally take an I out of hold at the wrong time or in the wrong orientation, often due to either some mismanaged inputs or trislexia. In such scenarios, it tends to be more of a reflexive maneuver you've gained from experience rather than a strike of brilliance.
As for "aesthetics," I personally see good finesse as more aesthetically pleasing. No offense muf and ct, but that move was pretty pointless in both of your games and looked to me to be a reflexive recovery from an accidental IRS. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
Anyhow, that's not to say that this move cannot be aesthetically pleasing in my book. It depends on the scenario. If the move is necessary and intentional, then it may qualify. By necessary, I mean that there was no practical way to avoid it from stacking differently, etc. This applies to the various crazy techniques you could do such as the triple rotations with the J/L, the double rotation of the T to traverse gaps, etc.
If you just think the execution of the technique is visually pleasing, then boy, you are in for a nightmare with Shirase. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

For that last case, the proper move is to IRS the I while holding right, then rotate twice after moving while still holding right.
If you fail to IRS it, you can still use the floorkick in TI to get it over.

12-11-2008, 12:15 AM
There's never a mystery to slowness. If you record one of your plays I guarantee that you'll see some combination of infinity abuse, lack of manual locking, and inefficient placement techniques. Speed won't come overnight, but you should make steady progress as long as you keep playing. For now, try to avoid really slow placements unless they offer a strong strategic advantage. All you pieces should be placed at approximately the same rate. If this is already the case then you're either crazy inefficient with every placement, or you aren't manually locking.
I wouldn't worry about it too much for now though. Survival is a more important goal when you're starting out. Take the time to learn the game and enjoy yourself. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Of course you are right with all your observations; I didnīt want to say that there is no reason for my bad times, I just meant that I just canīt say right after a game exactly why I wasnīt good.
What definitely costs me time is my lack of manual locking at higher speeds, Iīm aware of that, but I just canīt do it.
My stacking shouldnīt be much of a problem, I nearly always get silver SK medals now, but also here I really get lost at Shirase speed.

Still no camera, still on Sanwa. I got the m9 promotion test 3 times this weekend, but didn't quite make it each time. My fastest M is now 6:01. Another funny thing happened: I beat my 0-100 section time 2 games in a row without even trying. Both times I got m7, and the record is now 45:85. That's not a great rank for me, but I'm mentioning it to point out to Amnesia that it's possible to finish games despite the "omg http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif first section" pressure.

On the contrary, I think your hold usage in this game is much improved compared to the Shirase run. Sub 500 could use some rearrangements though as some placements felt particularly awkward, subsequently increasing your hold usage and robbing you of some I tetrominoes as well.
Above 500, the hold usage felt a lot more fluid perhaps because you relied less on it. I think you made a good choice not spamming it when you felt uneasy with certain placements, instead opting for simple skimming maneuvers to rid yourself of unwanted pieces.
Overall, the latter half looks great and the roll is impressive as well. I'm sure you could do much better in the first half though. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I am impressed..It is not a question of HOLD or consistency any more this time..You really managed it fast and efficient until 999.
And the delayed m roll was good !!
In my opinion you missed at least 15-20 secondes before 500, with your few mistakes and struggling moments to recover..

Exactely,c_t and I are reproducing almost the same scheme on our girlfriend.
NoTGhost is begining to manual lock on DOOM 0-100 and often get 180+, but his best on Master was only around 600, few months ago..
I use to get a bit upset when I see that she plays too much on DOOM, and I try to force her to practice slow 20G technics on 20G# G4. But she is so impatient..
There is no doubt that merpy is much more consistent than my gf, I think my lovely NoTghost would be unable to be 2 qualified.

Provisional m2 at level 806 in 5:49.86 as per the highscore list, bronze ST. Photo forthcoming.
I also had no fewer than 4 promotional exams (three S7 followed by one S8) and flunk'd `em all!
(Just when I think I had a handle on how TGM3 does its promotional exams and shooting stars, it throws another curveball at me. Now I don't know what to think.)
DeHackEd: I think the wiki has information on how Ti does qualification games. It has to do with the average of your last four games and some amount of randomness.
In Classic I'm qualified S2 still, but I've failed an S3 and an S4 exam. The S4 was so close http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

That comes from that TGM document, and to be honest I don't trust it much about anything. It kind of bothers me that our wiki is full of it already because the document is quite objectively an unreliable source.

I think it's just a local strong player, I remember Meroigo mentioning he's seen him play. Also there's a big difference between MM and qualified MM. (Though both are freaking awesome.)

For having been at least 3 times MM with such times, he should be at least MV or MO qualified..At this level I think the player has no problem anymore with his consistence.

c_t: I'm not sure of the alias of the person I saw that owned and cleared everything like it was nothing, all i know is that it was numbers, like this "223" is. Also, it was on another arcade (but, like me, he can go to both arcades ;P). If I see 223 I will tell him about this discussion, and ask about his best grades etc... ;D

Epic credit roll fail, but first time reaching 999. I played the last ~4 seconds 6 rows from the top of so.

Holy shit, 42 seconds for 200-300? Our Ti's record was 46.00, and it was mine.

I actually had this sequence of games:
M
M
M
M
M test (final grade not shown, probably m9)

Let's go better next time.
Your consistency is incredible, but how often do you earn the m-roll?
colour_thief
11-25-2009, 06:13 PM
Only when I accidently play too well. With m-roll only about 25% of my games would get M. It's definitely one of my weaknesses but I'm content to ignore it for now. Once I've got faster MKs on my board and possibly MV that might change, but there's too little payoff for now. It's hard to motivate myself to practice m-roll when there's real tetris to be played.

m-roll is a pretty hardcore representation of "real tetris"
Ti's invisible staff roll shouldn't really be called the "m-roll" as it's not a requisite of M grades.
Personally, I think invisibility is rather gimmicky, it's one of the things I dislike most about Ti. The skills that invis requires are of such narrow application; mastering invis alone does not make a strong player. Yet an invis specialist who is otherwise mediocre can play a slow and sloppy game, with a clear time of over 8 minutes and not even a bronze SK, and still obtain the invis roll and have a good chance of getting a MasterO or MasterM, whereas a stronger and more rounded tetris player can clear the game in under 5 minutes with gold SK, and because they haven't invested the time to get good at a gimmick, they will struggle to even get a MasterK rank.

The difference in my eyes is that performance is not especially dependent on problem solving. You could play with really terrible sub-TGM1-Gm decisionmaking and still max out the grade, as long as you can keep the playfield shape in your head. Sure the world's best still play amazingly, but the entry-to-midrange TAP Master GM player has wins that would look like complete ass if you could see the playfield.
I'd say there's a continuum of handicapping the player, with standard play on one side and invisibility and dance pad play etc on the other side. And stuff like Shirase [ ] blocks and one-handed play somewhere in between. Sure the core gameplay is there the whole way through, but as you approach the non-standard extreme the game challenges you in very different ways and becomes more gimmick than tetris.
I'm still up for the challenge, but in my view it's much less interesting than real tetris.

You guys are making me quite sad, haha. :<
I can see where you guys are coming from, but I personally enjoy invisible quite a bit. I think it is a refreshing challenge, and I think the restriction has changed the way I look at the game much like 20G has. I don't think it is as simple as "[maxing out the grade as long as] you can keep the playfield shape in your head." If you aren't being very thoughtful about how each placement as well as how potential subsequent placements will affect your stack and the visualization thereof, I can't imagine how you'd be doing anything other than taking a trip to the top.
To each his own as always, but I find this gimmick quite meaningful. I think all the time I've spent playing Phantom and practicing M-Roll has definitely been beneficial to my development as a player. In fact, I believe that taking the time to look at the game from this different angle has helped develop my approach to stacking overall.
I really like the way TAP's done it, where failing the m-roll puts you one grade away from the top. It's a "separate the boys from the men" kind of thing, and Master isn't such a bad grade after all. The game's basically saying, "okay, you're a master... but are you a GRAND master?" I think invisible as well as grandfather blocks tie in well with TGM's roots as a game meant to look "cool" and attract a crowd.

Yeah, I agree with muf here... You can be a Master, meaning you're really good at Tetris, but then you can be a Grandmaster, meaning you're so good that you don't even have to see what you're doing and still play reasonably well.
Given the way this discussion has turned I thought I'd repost this little comic I drew about colour_thief the other day.

everyone whining about the m-roll is just frustrated
knowing exactly what's going to happen to your piece when you give a specific input is the core element of the game, and there's no way to stress that more than making its environment invisible

It's been a while, but I made some progress after returning to the game for a bit. (CT requests that you ignore the 'crappy' m1 above my stellar s4.)
Hey muf, I know it's a nitpicky complaint, but could you change the new "Acme bowl" scores to "Narrows plaza bowl" from now on?

lol i went and played Ti for 3 hours today (50 yen for two credits is good value for money, me thinks! :D). I am getting S3's and S4's more consistently now. ^^
I broke my own record! ...but as usual, I suck, so I am still last in the leaderboard, haha. =(

I was so close S5 in a later game than in the pic, I think, it felt like it... ;D Too bad i screwed up like some stupid person and died. :(
Also, I saw Kyoto's Ti pro known as 223 in the leaderboards. I took a pic of his playfield when he played. I was so awesome. Waow. .... waow.

Can't wait to meet kan and eventually other Tokyo pros!! (...going to Tokyo tomorrow for some days, so it's soon, yay ^^)
Positions 9 to 13 on the provisional ranking are very close so you can make a big jump with a little improvement. You'll get there eventually if you keep playing. Is 223 the only pro you've seen in Kyoto? Did you talk to him?
Nice trip to Tokyo. Say hello if you meet some players and a Happy New Year. ^^
