I'm certain I can do better if I'm a little more lucky and don't mess up at end. My speed has improved too. I can get under 3:50 now, with my current best being 3:42:48. I should try to play TAP Normal again and see if I can improve my score over there too.

I don't play normal mode that much exept for 20G practice, but here is my best so far nevertheless:

Congrats on 400k btw. Now for Gm in Normal/TGM1, once you iron out a couple kinks and mental blocks, S8, S9 and Gm will be yours in a day.

This is from yesterday evening. For some reason I started playing almost 30 seconds faster than usual. I can finally play at some decent speed.

This is my fastest game yet. I didn't really focus on combos in this case. I get over 400.000 almost all the time now. ^^

This is my fastest Texmaster Normal Mode 500-999 time attack performance from a few weeks ago. Just missed S7. Best game overall is S7 (score around 90.000) in about 05:45. At the moment I'm trying to improve my stacking so as to achieve higher grades.

My fastest 0-500 performance is around 06:15. In theory I can finish the game in less than 12 minutes. In theory...

****! Slow compared to the games posted before, but I had more luck with the combos. Near the end I had a 4-step combo that nearly ended in a bravo. 2 measly blocks remained on the playfield. I'll upload my save file later after I've cleaned it up a little.

When I got 470099 earlier I knew I could do even better. So I kept trying this evening until I got lucky. Close to the end I had a 6-step combo that nearly ended with a bravo. Again 2 measly blocks prevented me of getting a combo bravo.

I've kept all my Novice Mode runs under 4 minutes. All you need to do to see the replay is select the game with the 3:40:28 time.

1. Ai 300 @ 3:40:28 504634
Broke the 500.000 mark. Rather slow run and nothing special to report. I was actually surprised to see the score during the credit roll. No real big combos, instead I made a lot of little combos.

Now all I need to do is emulate these kind of performances in TAP Normal Mode and get over 400.000 to clear one of my resolutions for this year. Of course there is the difficulty of the 2 special pieces and lag which will make things harder than they seem. I will try to give it a try during the weekend. ^^

I'm almost always saying this, but I think you would agree with me (if you have seen the replay ^^) that this could have easily been a lot more if I made slightly better decisions. I'm sure you guys can do even better it if you adapt your playstyle a little. Whether it's worth it, is another story. ;-)

I've been thinking about the highest score one can get without a (combo) bravo and I believe it's around 550.000. This should be doable for those with times around 03:15 or with a score over 450.000 in TAP Normal. Amnesia and colour_thief could definitely do it.

I'll try to get GM in Normal mode soon. ;-)

I improved my previous best 3 times in about 45 minutes. When I began this session I immediately noticed the unusual low time while comboing. So after playing some games for a higher score I tried to do some time attack while only going for tetrises. It seems I also improved on that front!

Sub 12 minutes!

I achieved this great result after only 3 games. The first 2 ended under level 100 because of mistakes while trying to combo. It feels good to get this kind of time knowing I wasn't pushing myself all that much. This is my first GM performance after getting GM in TGM last month. Confirmation is always good even though it's not in TGM. ^^

Well, I'm not sure of the value of time-attacking Novice, since it's really a score attack and Master mode is where fast, efficient play should be focused. Sure, there're no levelstops but that doesn't change much: it's just 300 levels of sub-1G play.

I guess you're right. I was looking for a new challenge in Novice and Normal mode as it's getting very hard to do even better unless I get a bravo. TAP Normal is so much harder, but I will see if I can do better in the near future. As for Novice mode, if I can get 563472 without bravo, only comboing until the early 200s and with that time then I see no reason why better players wouldn't get very close to the 600000 mark or even break it. But you will need to be very lucky with the piece sequence like in my case. ^^

That's how I feel about Special / Special Ti / Sudden / Sudden Ti.
I'm always fighting at the bottom of the tables and it's great fun once you get a new record. But truth to be told I'm just not enjoying TGM1 as much.

It's just so frustrating to play before 20G kicks in. And since you can't slide pieces in because of no hard drop and instant lock after soft drop it just adds to the frustration when playing pre-20G.

So I pretty much get so frustrated with how slow it is to play and that you either have to soft drop it half way and wait for it to drop on it's own (sloooooooow...) so you can slide it in, or the other option is to just drop it and create a hole in your stack every time a situation like that appears.

Because of all the frustration with the mode, I barely ever survive to 20G even.
Maybe I'll try it again after I get my S5 on Special Ti, though. :)

Ai

I never really had much trouble with the sub level 300 part of TGM. It might be boring to some, but having spent quite some time playing a lot of old school Tetris games the annoyances you mention are less of an issue for me.

On the other hand play between level 300 and 500 is truly frustrating and requires hard work to overcome.

I'll give you a few suggestions:

Instead of playing from the start all the time spend more time playing starting from level 300 and level 500. Play, play and play until you feel you're getting better. Normally you should improve drastically when you decide to play for real again. You may need some time to get more consistent again though.

Don't play the same way all the time. Play time attack sessions where you push yourself to the limit by manual locking like crazy . Other times don't manual lock at all or less and take your time to stack cleanly for tetrises.

Play very safely. This is you need to try and keep the stack low if you're not great at correcting messy situations at the top. Don't take any unnessesary risks. Let's say you have problems getting to level 500. What I would do is just play without looking at grade or time. With time you will get better and can afford to take more risks to improve your records. You need to get comfortable with your current level first before hoping to perform even better.

Having less time now for Tetris, I had to change my way of playing. I can't afford to spend hours to get a higher grade, level or time. So I spend my time wisely practicing my weaknesses. After I feel a better player I concentrate on a game mode for a while. In most cases I manage to make some great improvements after only playing a few games. Look what I have done in TGM. I was stuck with S9 after finishing the game. After a week I stopped playing the mode and focused entirely on my 20G play, which I knew was the problem. I spend a few weeks playing sessions of 30 minutes to an hour max. And when I decided to try for GM again I did it quite fast and with little effort.

Take it from me anyone can get GM in TGM given enough time, practice and determination. So good luck. ^^

It's clear my TGM rotation (not Ti style) 0G play needs to be improved. I play way too much 20G and/or 3 previews + hold. Should be able to clear Novice sub-3 minutes...

There are some tactical setups you can use to avoid having to slide. Here are a couple of examples (http://fumen.zui.jp/?m105@QdA3lbB3gbB3kbE3kbI3gbI3gbI3gbI3gbI3gbI3gb?I 3qbAAA7eAs/ADdDfhb+egb/ejb8ehb9enb9eycAAA7eB67?AAAAhdCAhbFYwNhbCAhbDAgbAA kcAAA7eAHFBNdCfibCfib?+ehb9eib+ehb9eib8ekcAAA7eCD7 Ap6AAAA), just to give you some idea of what you can do. In both cases, you clear with a triple, which costs virtually no time at all compared to a tetris. If you use your imagination, I'm sure you can come up with ones of your own.

I don't really use the methods demonstrated in Edo's fumen. Probably becuase of my limited stacking insight. I prefer using overhangs which I'm getting more comfortable at. I would have created overhangs near the tetris hole in both cases. Or I would have covered the tetris hole in both cases. Especially in the second example because there is no effort needed to correct the situation very fast.

Soft dropping is indeed frustrating. but with some practice you will be able to execute it very smoothly. It's just a question of good timing and being patient. But I understand that having the piece lock prematurely often or losing a big amount of time trying to execute it correctly is a reason to avoid sliding in OG.

Nice time rednefed. I will join you too and try to get sub 3 minutes! ^^

Rosti LFC

Edo's point is that you don't create an overhang. Instead you create a hole in the 9th column or block off your well temporarily, because the problem can easily be fixed without losing much speed.

It works for more than just low-G TGM1 as well. If there's no easy overhang to make because the stack is a bit messy, or there's nowhere convenient to place a piece, it's quite useful sometimes to block off the hole or make a hole in the 9th column and then just avoid stacking too much on top of it.

It's like the SZ start in guideline games - platform for a tetris instead of softdropping to save valuable time.

Anyway, I went for score attack again:

Great speed while comboing.

In the game I posted in my last post with a time of 02:57:70 I tried to clear only tetrises. There's only one 3 step combo before level 200 with a triple, tetris and double. The score was 484107. So I think you should be able to break 500000 with your speed and a combo or 2 around level 200.

Also got Gold CO for the second time ever as far as I know. I will try to upload a video soon.

COMBO GM!!! The 600000 barrier can certainly be broken without bravo in Texmaster Novice. Oh and look at that time while comboing! Can you imagine the score if I somehow manage to get a bravo? And to say I was unable to break 400k at the start of the year. ^^

Once I sort out some encoding problems I'll upload the replay and save file. I also still need to encode the Gold CO video I promised. ^^;

That's a really nice time. If I stack for combos, I end up closer to 3:25-3:30 due to all the line clear delays.

I guess you win this one.

Ai
09-26-2009, 09:14 PM
Don't say that. You could easily beat my score with a bravo. Without one might be a little more difficult though. Besides you're better than me in everything else. ^^

What matters is the score in TAP Normal and the difference over there is almost nonexistent. I'd rather break 500k in TAP Normal than get 600k in Texmaster. Also if colour_thief, Edo, Amnesia etc. play this seriously for a while they would do better.

Concerning the speed increase. Just practice time attack for a while and you will be able to lower your clear time. Prior to playing for score, play time attack till you get a few games near 3 minutes. Piece placement while combo stacking is the least of my worries as it happens almost automatically. As a result multiplayer play and other game modes suffer from this without adequate preparations...

I've seen the 581109 run's replay. I could have gotten closer or even broken 600k if I didn't make 2 mistakes near the end. At level 262 I misdropped and at the end I rushed to finish the game instead of clearing a tetris. Some very high stacking and a lot of luck involved in this run. But I wasn't nervous. I was unaware of the score and time as it didn't really feel like a great game. ^^

Not a new high score. I had close to 445000 near the end with an opportunity to stack for a tetris and seal the deal, but I once again fail to deliver when it matters. But I'm getting more and more consistent.

Top 3 scores:

1. 581109 - 03:09:45
2. 578424 - 03:18:13
3. 563472 - 03:30:70

Still no videos but you can find my save files in my signature for the time being. ^^

You can find both the old and new save file. Use the file in the Texmaster beta folder to watch my recent games. I've added the times above so as to make it easy to find the replays. I have replays of all my Novice runs with scores above 500k and a few time attack games. The game with the Gold CO is the run with a time of 03:23:71. The first combo chain is the Gold CO.

I won't be bothering you guys again unless I break 600000. Time to focus on TAP and other modes. ^^

My invisible play, I'm guessing? I have never trained for it, nor bothered to. It's probably the one part of TGM I don't see myself trying to master. Hence in my Special m play I played the best I could with manual locking.

Are you saying that you need more luck to get higher scores more consistently compared to TAP Normal? Or do you think the scoring system is somehow broken?

I have about 20 games with scores around 550000 and I've gotten very close to my best score more than a few times. In TAP Normal in most great games I end up with scores around 450000. So far I've only gotten over 460000 a dozen times.

Luck with the randomizer. That is, you don't draw Z-S or S-Z very often when comboing, and that I's come along often enough, especially to get combos with two tetrises. It's good to leave column 8 a little lower than 1-7 so J's and L's can be placed flat side down for singles, so they aren't problem pieces.

Ai
07-06-2010, 01:27 AM
I remember mentioning on the IRC channel last year that the randomizer is easier to work with in Texmaster after someone said that the Texmaster randomizer was harder for play. I don't know about normal play, but I completely agree with you that the Texmaster randomizer is better suited for longer and higher scoring combos. This is what I was trying to show with the short videos I posted in one of my previous posts.

Best first combo of the game is over 90000 at around level 60 without bravos, which I have done a few times. In TAP Normal best first combo is around 70000 near level 75.

Without bravo. And highest score at level 100 in TAP Normal is just over 100000 and in Texmaster Novice around 140000.

I guess you win this one.

^^

Anyway good luck breaking 600000 without AC. I'm 113% sure it's possible. ^^

EDIT:

Can you share your save file? Thanks in advance.

Normal + 20G:
340991 score
300 @ 3:23:96

Strategy: combo! Pyramid stack with priority to the left. With columns 1-5 high, mobility's virtually identical to 0G. Keep column 9 medium to low, column 8 about 8-12 high in case you need to skim or the randomizer starves you. Oh, and as usual with Normal or Easy, luck of the draw.

I was playing TAP Normal 20G a while ago and wasn't able to improve my current best. I tried following your strategy, but I clearly need to see it in action. It'd be nice if you could share a Texmaster Normal or Special 20G combo game.

Welcome and thanks for participating. Combo stacking isn't really difficult, but I would advise you to start with tetris stacking until your time is closer to 4 minutes. I bet you'll get a score around 300000 before you know it. For combo stacking advice I would suggest you watch the following videos:

Tetris the Grandmaster 2: Normal mode 484887 (http://www.youtube.com/user/colourthief#p/u/16/57fd3zFuv78)
Ai T*xm*st*r Novice Mode 581109 ^^ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co-XiBHpBKo)

The first video is TAP Normal which has 2 special items you have to deal with compared to Texmaster Novice. If you need any help just ask. ^^

Is there no records thread for TexMaster Doubles? Me and imiganai have cleared it before I think, though I don't have the time/screenshot on file. (also unfortunately texmaster doesn't seem to save replays for doubles mode)

More importantly though, we spent way too long today on the ridiculous Big/Big doubles and Normal/Big doubles modes.

Here's our best Big/Big performance:
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8123/20110212214145.png

And here's Big/Normal (oh god):
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/256/20110212211202.png

imiganai never even plays big mode, ever, so the big/big record was extremely good, considering. It's basically impossible to maneuver around each other's pieces without careful planning...and also if you ever misdrop by one column you're completely hosed. The normal wallkicks also don't work (i'm assuming because it's trying to wallkick by one normal column instead of one big column).

Our big/normal strategy was to have the normal player take 4 columns and the big player take 5 big columns (= 10 normal columns). It made things slightly less stupidhard, but not by much. This particular "record" (if you can even call it that) was set with imiganai on the left with normal, and me on the right playing big. Again, imiganai never plays 4 columns or big mode (though i do so every so often on DS). Also, the normal player can drop an O piece on the big player's side without causing any problems. Or two Is or Js or Ls, I guess, but that's a lot more troublesome unless you already have the next one in your preview.

Question: how should doubles mode records work? Does the doubles mode 20G section after 300 ever end? Because the timer keeps rolling even after both players hit 300...

Should we be attempting to screenshot right after the 2nd player hits 300 (and going for fastest completion), or should we be going for longest survival time after 300 (which has its own issues since you could just artificially inflate your time by having a 10-minute 0-100 section...)

I have never played Doubles mode in Texmaster, so I wasn't aware of the seemingly never ending credit roll bug. I'd say it's better to keep it a time attack challenge. It looks like you guys are getting good at these modes. ^^

I mean I don't know whether it's endless or not; we just didn't see any actual credits scrolling by, so we have no idea how long it's supposed to last xD. (more important is the fact that the timer keeps ticking...)

problem with time attack is that you basically have to screenshot it right as you hit 300 since the timer doesn't freeze at all. And be careful not to hit F6 in the process...

Also, are you sure that your Texmaster replay file is full? I've heard of problems with them randomly deciding to not save any more games, but they should be able to hold up to 999 replays when they're behaving.

I think that if I am not making progress anymore, or I am satisfied with what I'm doing, I'll put something on YouTube.

Provided I'm RARELY satisfied with what I'm doing, expect some asking in the future ^^

Right now it's ok! Ai gave me some nice advice during my mission to reach GM. Besides, I think I'll just practice alone for some time.

Oh, and for the 999 replays : Just put in there my 300 ragequits at my computer randomly deciding to forget my input, my 300 replays of sudden TI where I last 30 seconds, 300 replays that are actually me striving for Normal GM, and 99 replays of complete randomness.

It's cool though, I just erased everything useless so I don't think I'll have that problem again.

Your second half should be around 5 minutes or less. It should be significantly shorter than the first half.

Ai
05-24-2011, 06:57 PM
When I was practicing for a sub 11 minutes time I was aiming for 0-500 in about 05:40 and 500-999 near 05:20. You can try to improve your sub 20G time, but like KevinDDR mentions above there's more room to improve your 20G time. In the game above average time per 20G section is a little over 01:06. You need to get it down to at least 01:04.

Use Texmaster for practice and attempt to get as close as possible to 1 minute playing 900-999. When you're able to do this consistently, start playing 800-999 and aim for a time under 02:05. Afterwards 700-999 under 03:10. Finally I made the jump to 500-999 in about 05:15. When you're getting comfortable with the above targets try do 700-999 in under 05:05 and 500-999 under 05:10. Switch back to TGM and use the 20G code to time attack the 20G mode. Normally you'll be able to get times sub 11 minutes quite easily (Gm may be a little harder) if you can do the 500-999 section under 05:20 in Texmaster. Currently I'm trying to get 20G section times under 1 minute more frequently which is hard since the stacking must be very stable and clean to clear tetrises.

Got a couple S9 that could have been GM under the 12 minutes limit (died at 950 or so), so I might eventually give you some GM videos.

Problem is, I alternate really bad plays and really decent ones. Before my near GM play, I got like 4 twice, then S5 at like 600, then S9 at 950. I tried again after having a short break and I died at 200 or something. I really shouldn't make such an emphasis on speed >_>

Texmaster Novice Mode 633592; Gold CO Bravo Combo ^^ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk8BHe7BlEY)

Finally a score over 600000. In the last section there's a gold CO bronze AC combo that certainly helped me over the 600k barrier. But still, I think I would have obtained a score somewhere close to or over 600000 anyway. And without the little mess up at the end I would have ended up with about 640k.

It's been ages since I last played this mode with the intention to improve my personal best. I only play a few games once in a while to see if I still got it. I usually manage to get scores well over 500k quite easily after a few games.

The score was achieved yesterday evening after less than 10 games. First I obtained a silver CO medal, followed by 2 bronze CO and then finishing it off with a gold CO ending with a bravo single. The all clear boosted the score with a little more than 50000 points which is about the same as what you get for a tetris clear in a long combo chain at that stage of the game. The gold CO bronze AC combo increased the score with 182346 points which I don't think I've done before. I need to play TAP Normal again and hopefully I'll make some progress over there as well. ^^

I hope I can do it again but faster :)
Regards...

Nahu
EDIT: better time record.

Bravo double at the start of a Novice mode run. I will upload my current Texmaster save file later and next time I'll upload smaller screenshots. ^^

Training with my FSTE I got this:

I think that's the first time I break 200k. Pretty happy with that run, it finally felt like I knew what I was doing

Provided I have a novice record here, I thought "Why not improve it?"

It's really hard to have a good enough stack for comboes. What's your advice?

EDIT : Hehe nahu, only ready to take on the 11 minute limit, or would you strive for sub 10? ;)
