Save the Arcades: Help an Arcade with TGM

If any of you guys frequent bemani or fighting game forums, you might have already heard of this. Stride Gum is running a contest where you play a flash game and donate the points you earn to an arcade; and the arcade with the most points gets $25,000 to spend on new games and so forth. Please play and donate your points to Arcade UFO. Registering takes about a minute, and doesn't spam your email at all. The contest ends on Tuesday at midnight EST, so this thing is almost over.

Arcade UFO is one Texas' best arcades. UFO is the only arcade on this with an actual emphasis on Bemani, what with having DJMax Technica (IIRC they were the first in the country to get it), and a customized OpenITG setup with exclusive songs made by its patrons. In addition to all of this, they are one of the few arcades in the US with an actual TGM machine, so that's reason enough to support it :p

Anyway, I'm bringing this over here, since UFO keeps switching the lead with Starbase, and what leads we've had have not been very commanding. As fellow Tetris fans, I am hoping that you guys can take some time out to play this game; what little you can offer will help us immensely :)

The game is tedious, I won't lie. All of us playing it hate it. Most of the people playing for UFO are trying to each earn a daily 1,000,000 points. Anyway, it's not hard to earn a lot of points in one go. Use joytokey and a controller to play the game with more precision, and also enable rapidfire for the button you map for shooting. Pick a character with a shield and deploy the shield when a barrage of bullets comes your way, and you'll absorb them with no penalty.

    We all appreciate it~

  2. No, I think Arcade Infinity was.

  3. Ray: I dunno for sure, haha. That whole post was mainly an edited c/p :p

In any case, this thing only has a few hours to go, and the point spread is only about 3 million points, any help we can get from you guys is greatly appreciated~

  4. It would be a bit more noble of you to come here and say "Go save your favorite arcade", as opposed to "Come save our arcade." I understand you have a nice arcade, but there are many other extraordinary arcades in the US, such as Arcade Infinity and Ground Kontrol.

  5. Arcade UFO has TGM. The others don't. For most of the people on here that's probably all they would need to know anyway.

I think it had more to do with the fact that this is Tetrisconcept and that Arcade UFO has TGM1, rather than "this is my favourite arcade". It's more of a "preserve arcades that have Tetris/TGM".

  7. In any case, the contest is over, and it looks like UFO won (the official announcement should come later today), so for those of you who helped, I thank you :)

  8. I'm not sure if you've looked at the website, but only 4 arcades are eligible. As noted, only one has a TGM game. If Arcade Infinity or Acme Bowl were on there we'd probably support them instead, but they're not.

  9. I thought it was for any arcade, not just a particular 4....I stand corrected.

  10. Acme Bowl's arcade pretty much sucks, though, and Acme Bowl management hates it, as I understand things.

  11. Bill Masterman wouldn't like to hear you say that. Bill Masterman also reads these forums from time to time!

Bill Masterman should put his Ti in a Blast City with a decent tri-sync monitor, replacing the dying JVS I/O board, and then Acme Bowl could get a bit more respect. Also, what is it with people getting mugged in an arcade?

  13. I'm not saying Bill's contributions to the arcade are bad, I'm saying the conditions of it determined by Acme are pretty bad. Giving Acme $25000 wouldn't be a productive way to improve the arcade's quality.

Also, muf: the arcade is near an exterior door, so people can easily walk in and perpetrate muggings. And Bill doesn't own a single candy cab - not sure what's up with that.

    Oh. My. Word.
    How is that even possible?

  15. Hey guys! The sequel is here and in full force. The new game is a ripoff of Robotron.

Arcade Infinity, one of the sweetest arcades outside Japan, is in the running. You all should know this arcade because it's the only arcade outside Japan with TGM3!!!! It's currently in 2nd place. :( There's only 3 days left!

I challenge you all to read this and not play this game compulsively:

  16. I don't disagree with you, but I have to say that if these guys are making $250 a night then they don't have anything to complain about. Certain arcades are lucky to make less than half of that.

Also it's tricky, Ground Kontrol is pretty near me and they're also a good place. Definitely not a true "Japanese style game center" like AI, but they actually have some quite interesting plans if they win. They have a ton of machines in a warehouse that they can't install because they simply don't have room.

  17. I don't know anything about arcades but $450 a day in maintenance costs is quite a hefty sum.

  18. Yeah that seems kind of unreasonable. $12000 a month in maintenance costs? Really? Really?

  19. I'm sure he is lumping mundane stuff such as rent and electricity along with staff wages and new game purchases. He just doesn't want to wither like so many arcades have with stale games that have ever shrinking profits.
