The Introduction Thread

  1. I'd say the swap from keyboard to stick took about 3-4 weeks for me as well before my stick was at least as good as my keyboard play. Now I can't go back to keyboard. There is a lot of muscle memory you need to develop, so you just have to play a bunch :)

  2. I'm used to... Not playing this game? I don't know, I'm used to ARS buttons and not SRS already, but I'm not familiar at all with the movement tech in this game. I'll practice.
Also, I changed my arcade controller's stick with a sanwa, but not the buttons. They still suck hard, worst buttons I've ever touched, so until I find the cash to buy 2 sanwa or seimitsu buttons I'll be using stick and two keyboard keys. :\

  3. Sanwa buttons are about £2 a pop. So decking your stick out shouldn't be too expensive. Though I'd recommend at least 3 buttons. Even 4 if you can do it (At least the first two buttons and hold.)

As for the tech, that usually comes through practice and watching other people do said tech so you know when to do it.

  4. And flicking through the guide hosted by Kitaru occasionally: http://kitaru.1101b.com/TGMGUIDE/

Watching other people do it is only good if you know what they're doing. Someone like Qlex does the French touch so quickly that it's not obvious at all what is actually happening, for example.

  5. Thanks guys, I'll just get my buttons and start training for serious. I feel like this is a bad decision for my work career :p

  6. Don't worry. 90% of my play time nowadays is me playing the game on my work breaks. So even with a couple hours a week of practice you'll still see improvement.

  7. I don't know man, I'm trying but it feels like being anally raped... Does it ever stop hurting?

  8. Fewer hours will mean you progress slower. Though progress will still happen (I've been playing casually for nearly 2 years now and I'm starting to close in on a T.A.Death M. If I made it my main game I'd be closing in on a TAP Master GM at this point yet what I'm proving here is that even with something as simple as a few games a day, you'll still improve over time.)

  9. Oh well. May sound like a stupidly low achievement but I got my first S1 in TGM1 today. I wonder how many hours of my life from now I'll get my GM but I ain't quitting until I do :D

  10. Congratulations! My first S2 I obtained on the 8th of March 2015, and my first GM was on the 12th of October 2015. I'm sure there are better ways of learning than what I used though, so you can probably do it quicker! :D Good luck.

  11. Well, hello everyone.

My first exposure to Tetris was the NES version, back not long after it first came out. My mom was frankly better at it than I was. I had heard of Tetris the Grand Master in the 2000s, via videos and whatnot, but my first real exposure to it was the AGDQ2015 run. I loved watching it, but dismissed it as "Something people better than me did". Over the last year or so, I've been watching Protomagicalgirl stream both Texmaster and TGM itself, and recently decided "What the heck" and downloaded Texmaster and ordered an arcade stick. So far I'm not particularly good at it--my best grade in Normal mode (TGM1) is an S1, and my longest survival is to about 380 in a separate game--but it's great fun.

    Nice to meet everyone! :D

Welcome to Tetrisconcept @Emptyeye :) Neat to recognize a name from the Metroid speedrunning community. Hope to see you take interest enough to pursue the TGM series to GM and beyond. :)

  14. HI EVERYONE! ^^

I'm new here! I'm another starry eyed beginner that got inspired by @Protomagicalgirl :3 She's pretty much goals. Other than that, I found myself staying up until the whee hours of the morning this past SGDQ watching TGM runners. It was all such a rush, and the sheer dexterity of the runners really inspired me. That and the music, I can recognize Shinji Hosoe's tunes from a mile away. xP

As for me. I'm an indie game Developer, an artist, and the occasional speedrunner. (please don't ask me what I'm running)

  17. This might sound out of left field, but were you a DDR player in New England a long while back? I think I recall seeing your name around forums and at conventions back in the day.

    Welcome!

  18. Hah! "Around New England" may be pushing it, but yes, I did post on DDRFreak/AIJ/ITGFreak back in the day, probably about 10 years ago or so now. And I did go to a tournament or two, including one where to this day I have no idea how I placed 4th (I'm not saying this to be modest--I don't think anyone was quite sure what scoring system they used, though as I recall our collective best guess was that the people running the tournament [Who were basically just staff of the arcade in the mall and had no idea how DDR tournaments really worked] misinterpreted "OK" in the rules they printed out to mean "Good"*). I certainly did play a bunch of DDR/ITG in CT though!

    And thanks!

*for those who don't play Dance Dance Revolution, the short version is that these are two quite different things in that game, even though they mean the same thing in common English. Confusing one for the other would lead to very different tournament results.

  19. Hello,

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?
I have always wanted to get into the TGM games after seeing them on GDQ, however only now have I gotten bored enough of other games to jump into TGM1. I got my PCB in last Friday. No I would not, I only today got to S1 finally.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
Just TGM1 right now, if anybody knows where all the Ti went and if TAP ever comes down a little in price, I would probably try them as well. I mostly play TGM after I get off work for a few hours or so.

    3. What other games besides Tetris keep you busy?
None right now, i'm kinda bored of other games atm.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
    Nope.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
    I honestly don't remember.

  20. Welcome to the community, @Zeern

A PCB player from the start? Solid. Are you using a cab or a supergun?

Keep doing exactly that and you will have a GM in no time.
