Forum Structure

  1. Well, strategies how to stay on the "floor",downstacking, opponent distraction, combos, playing with different speed on different phase of the game, balanced construction and stuff like that.

P.S. colour_thief I know there are strategy articles in the general discussion. But thats what I`m trying to say. There is too much random information in general.

  2. Any objections to moving the tournament threads back into Discussion, retaining their prefix, and then removing the prefix of everything else in Competition?

I object, cause I find "foo over bar 15-0" posts to be highly annoying when they're in a forum I actively follow for useful posts.

  4. I agree that they do stick out a bit in discussion as just posting results more than having a conversation.

Currently record posting accounts for about 25% of posts with tournaments/leagues being perhaps 5%. But that's over the history of the forum. If recent volumes continue I see them being about equally active. The only problem is that they are concentrated into a small number of threads at the moment, but it wouldn't take much to fix that. If forum extensions that allow automated tournaments don't suck, I could see it flourishing with "Blitz" Tournaments that start and end within the span of 1-2 hours. I could see one happening every weekend... again, if they work well.

So how about everything in Competition loses its prefix, and tournaments/leagues get their own experimental forum and we see how it works? I could see TDS, Blockbox (standard), and Blockbox (ARS 20G) tourneys becoming popular.

  5. Why not just take the prefix off everything in Competition that isn't a tournament or challenge?

Sounds good, but I would suggest it being done like this:

Tournaments becomes a subforum of Competition, challenges remain in the main forum with a prefix, everything else (records and tourneys) lose their prefix, and once there are enough threads in the tournaments forum, it can be moved out from being a subforum to being one of the main forums.

  7. I'm highly outspoken against subforums, especially on a forum of our size. I don't see the point in making 1/3 of our proposed forums 2 clicks from the main page.

Also I don't agree with creating a "Challenge" prefix at all. It's a records thread like any other except the game isn't Tetris. And the thread title already conveys that easily, making the prefix useless. If you absolutely must, just conserve the off-topic prefix and leave them in the Competition forum (re-renamed Records below).

    So I'd say:

    Wiki
    Discussion (with off-topic prefix)
    Records (with off-topic prefix)
Versus (with forum extention for automated tournaments)

First of all, vBulletin displays subforums on the main forum listing, just in a smaller font within the forum header. So it's still one click from the main page, one way or the other.

You clearly haven't looked at any of the threads tagged with challenge. A challenge is something like Jago's no-singles thread. It's a leaderboard most of the time, but it's something unconventional, like an added handicap or goal, or in the case of Rosti's thread, a different shmup each time. I like having them prefixed cause these sort of threads tend to get lost in a sea of records threads.

That's what you've been proposing all along. It doesn't at all feel like you're actively engaging in compromises here.

  9. I think putting tournaments and challenges in a subforum of records is a good idea.

  10. Well if they're one click away from the main page I don't mind so much. I'd be willing to try out Records and Versus subforums.

I still disagree with the challenge prefix though, on the grounds that everything is a challenge and we should "keep things simple". And as someone who actually participates in weirder things like one handed play I've never had an issue finding these threads. I think these should stay in Records like they always have, prefixless.

I think this highlights a key point, a lot of people only want to look at threads they find interesting, and don't want to be distracted by "useless" threads in the same forum. Unfortunately, people's opinions on what is and isn't interesting differ, so it's hard to move topics into separate forums without at least some people feeling inconvenienced. However, I think we can unanimously agree that trolling topics and forum drama isn't a very pleasant thing to have to deal with when you just want to read about tetris. How would people feel about having another forum for controversial topics to be moved to, so that they don't get in the way of normal activity?

Also, what are people's opinions on having another forum for site related topics such as "Forum (& Wiki) glitches", "Captcha", and "vBulletin"? For starters, they're completely unrelated to Tetris. Also, discussions that pertain to the running of the site are important to read now and again, but are less likely to be seen if they get bumped down in the general discussion. If they were in a forum of their own, people would know to check there, say, once a week, and then they could get back to their normal browsing in the general discussion.

What are people's views on these two forums, controversial stuff, and site related stuff?

    edit:

    Code:
    1. Wiki [offsite link like it used to be]

    2. Tetris Discussion [forum]
    3. Competition [forum]
     3.a Tournaments [subforum]

    4. Off-Topic Discussion [forum]

  13. i really think there should an offtopic/social part. tournaments should just be stickied in tetris discussion or competition.

That's actually a pretty neat idea! Ongoing tournaments could be stickied, and when a tournament ends it gets unstuck. Instead of a prefix for tournaments a tag should then suffice to easily search for them.

Yeah, but what if ppl organize more and more tournaments, I hate a long sticky list :(

  16. I feel the same way. Though maybe forum software has evolved beyond this? Can users de-sticky a thread for their username only?

  17. idk if this is a bit off topic...but i wish there was a big link to a tetris chat. like the link to the wiki.
