Doctor Spin - Tetris

  1. And I have a strong sensitivity to double standards, which makes me ask....

Do you legal right to a copy of that song Tepples? It was an actual commercial song, released in the UK. Dr. Spin is actually Andrew Lloyd Webber under a different name. I'm absolutely serious. I've even seen piano sheet music for it (at auction), though god knows what the arrangement is like.

As I understand it, I have a legal right to the song, but not the recording. The song that was labeled "Dr. Spin - Tetris.mp3" at the height of the old Napster was just is "Get Ready 4 This" (which I own a copy of) mixed with "Korobeiniki". I own a lawfully made copy of Jock Jams vol. 1 (which contains "Get Ready 4 This") and Russia2000 (which contains "Korobeiniki"). Besides, in the United States, 17 USC 1008 as well as keeping a low profile make me "Not A Target".

Moderator please split this music piracy subtopic because the argument of the comment is valid even when replacing the MP3 with "Russia2000 - Korobeyniki" which was available legitimately on MP3.com as a download and as a CD and is performed in D minor.

  3. No need for all that jusitfication... a simple request would have sufficed. [IMG]

I think it is no more legal for you to have that mp3 than it is for me to have the rom to Tetris Attack, given that I own Panel de Pon and Yoshi's Island. Anyhow, I don't really care about this issue at all, I just wanted to point out that the standard you applied to roms you were not applying to music. Or perhaps you didn't know it was a commercial song? Anyways here is a chance to relieve your guilt:

Strangely the physical CD says it's based on Korobushka. Is that the same thing or did they get it wrong? That would be embarassing. Here's a closeup shot from my copy. I tried to get the CD but only the liner notes were turning out decent.

Anyways now that I split this into it's own topic, is there anyone from the UK that would be able to talk about this single?

That was the case. It sounded like something I might find on ocremix.org.

Why is the shipping twice as much as the price of the item itself? I ran into this same problem when trying to buy a GBA Movie Player.

Korobeiniki == Korobushka, but Get Ready 4 This != Korobushka.

  5. Yeah, I knew it sounded eerily similar to another song but I couldn't remember which. Though it's an obvious ripoff, I don't think it's exactly the same. Not that that helps as I recall Dr. Dre had to pay royalties on a bass line he paid someone to play *similarly* to the line in some old song. Bastards. Oh well, at least the amen break is "free" (or rather, royalties have never been asked for it). At any rate, this remix is in greater violation than a mere sampling in my opinion. And to be honest, even Adrew Lloyd Webber's classic works borrow very heavily from other sources...

I also agree that it doesn't sound very professional. The whole thing strikes me likes it's trying to be a parody. Hopefully someone from the UK can fill us in on the context in which this song was released.
